If wikipedia is to be believed, it started as a campaign song for Timothy Leary’s run for govener agenst Reagan. I only mention this because of the irony of it all.
Matt, that’s straight out of Leary’s autobiography and is confirmed by other sources as well. Serious irony, yeah. 🙂
