Left’s War on Science Watch: Bill Maher edition.

Via Hot Air, and the best part? Watching the faces of his guests curdle. Ever so slightly.  They start around the point where Maher starts babbling about inoculations. (Language warning):

Interestingly, the people who most like to beat their chests and howl about all those awful fundamentalist ‘Christianists’ on the Right* absolutely hate it when the entire anti-vaccination Left thing comes up. Their utter lack of self-awareness of  just how ironic their responses tend to be should provide the interested observer with hours of fun at parties – for a given value of ‘fun,’ of course…

High-water mark reached on ending the War on Some Drugs.

As per this memo, medical marijuana users will no longer be targeted by the Department of Justice.  At least, in the states where medical marijuana is legal.  Well, it’s more like the DOJ is no longer requiring prosecutors to go after medical marijuana users.  If the case is unambiguous, at least.  The operating phrase is ‘limited resources:’ pot is still considered to be the Devil’s Drug by the federal government, and they reserve the right.

Just generally… reserve the right.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m happy that they’re going to stop going after chemotherapy patients.  But this is at the limit of easy, which means that it’s as far as the administration is going to go.  So I’d recommend against basing your future life choices on the likelihood of a more (ahem) liberal recreational drug policy…

Reptoids. The Balloon Boy story involves *Reptoids*.

Why was I was not told this? Apparently the father was looking for evidence that Hillary Clinton is a shape-changing alien – stop laughing! This is a part of contemporary conspiracy theory.

Normally I’d link to the article that Pundit & Pundette had found on this, except that a): the video’s been removed and b): the author of said article decided to make an inaccurate slam against Tea Partiers. I call it inaccurate because, generally speaking, Tea Partiers don’t particularly have anything against the Jews.  Hell, these days most of them aren’t all that personally mad at Hillary Clinton.

It was the Dachshund dressed like a rabbi…

…that earned this HuffPo piece the completely ungrudging link.  Fair warning: when they say “The Most Inappropriate Halloween Costumes Possible (PHOTOS),” they mean it. This is NSFW unless your boss has a robust sense of humor. Or agrees with you that Western Civilization is doomed.

Rasmussen: 54/42 against health care rationing.

It would seem that finally putting out all the various versions, alternates, and fevered mutterings of what the Democrats are trying to call ‘health care reform’ has helped to clarify matters for voters some more. It’s just not clarifying matters in a fashion that will make the current ruling party happy. Rasmussen’s latest snapshot:

Now that the Senate Finance Committee has passed its version of health care reform, 42% of voters nationwide favor the health care reform plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s down two points from a week ago and down four from the week before.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 54% are opposed to the plan.

It is perhaps unkind to point out two details about the 42%:

  • The current state of affairs means that the number represents support for the hope that there will eventually be an acceptable health care bill.
  • Hope is not a plan.

…but it’s probably necessary.  Watching the… seven*?… Democratic factions try to reconcile the mess that they’ve created for themselves should be remarkably engrossing.

Moe Lane

*Well, you’ve got House progressives & Senate liberals; like vulnerable House members and ‘moderate’ Democratic Senators, there’s the House/Senate split on outlook to consider.  So that’s four.  Then there’s the House’s and the Senate’s leadership, with the two groups being barely civil to each other these days.  That’s two more.  And then there’s the White House, who pretty much caused this mess by letting the other six factions have free rein over the process.  So, seven.

NH Ways & Means chair Susan Almy thinks you’re dumb.

That’s the only conclusion that I can come to after reading this eyebrow-raiser of a quote.  The context: the Democrat-controlled New Hampshire legislature is bringing in a pro-income tax group called ITEP to a summit/seminar (the rhetoric keeps changing), and state W&M chair Rep Almy is upset at all the shadowy conspiracies arrayed against said group.  Well, she assumes that there are shadowy conspiracies; since her side has them (Tides Foundation, Soros, ACORN), then so must the other.  In the process of mangling even the popular perception of the McCarthy era, Almy tosses off this whopper:

“I have even had people emailing to yell at me for supporting a sales tax, which I have never done – I simply invited a respected state economist in to talk to us about why an income tax was bad for business, and he said we should consider a sales tax instead.”

Let me change some phrases around to highlight the absurdity of that statement:

“I have even had people emailing to yell at me for supporting eating puppies, which I have never done – I simply invited a respected state economist in to talk to us about why eating kittens was bad for business, and he said we should consider eating puppies instead.”

You don’t invite in a puppy-eater to talk to you unless you’re at least receptive to the idea of eating puppies. And if you’ve truly ‘never’ supported sales taxes, it seems just a bit odd to be this upset when people point out that your actions contradict you – particularly when your own comments don’t distinguish between your own opinions, and those of ‘a respected state economist.’  I find it difficult to believe that she didn’t notice the tacit admission in her own statement; I suspect that she did, and simply assumed that none of her opponents would be bright enough to do the same*.

On the bright side: even if she is playing conspiracy theorist, at least she hasn’t dragged in the Jews somehow.  That’s something, at least.

‘It’s a meme, which is a Yankee word…’

‘…for something that’s really popular.’ That’s from RS colleague (and friend) Caleb Howe, during his time with the American Liberty Tour. Some good stuff here:

Pay particularly close attention to the assumption that some in the Republican party’s leadership are making.

Of course it’s going to be the Wayne’s World version.

Book of the Week: And Another Thing…

Well, you knew this was coming. I almost picked it up yesterday, but I can get it for roughly a quarter off if I’m willing to wait a few days for it. I did look through enough of it to assuage my main fears; the author took his assignment seriously.

So we say good-bye to Faithful: Two Diehard Boston Red Sox Fans Chronicle the Historic 2004 Season, and hello to And Another Thing…. Please, God: don’t let it suck.

This is mostly for the clouds.

Sped-up cloud video always interested me. I assume that’s true for most people, more or less.

Why was I looking for a ‘O Fortuna’ video in the first place? Because it was on the radio.
