They all look alike to Sheila Jackson-Lee (D, TX-18).

[UPDATE]: Ace of AoSHQ makes a point about the Congressional Record that I no longer have to get around to making, and Allahpundit of Hot Air lets us know that this was not the dumbest thing Rep. Jackson-Lee said today.

I was sent this video of Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee’s announcement of the survival of South Vietnam to the present era with a simple “Words escape me.”

Well, that’s why I’m here.

To begin with, may I be blunt? I shall be blunt: Rep. Jackson-Lee is what happens when you mandate gerrymandering as a tool of social policy for forty years. Note that I did not say ‘racial gerrymandering,’ although that’s essentially what majority-minority districting is: if we were drawing up election maps to concentrate as many green-eyed voters in a particular district as possible and waited half a century we’d end up with stunningly idiotic green-eyed Members of Congress, too. Or redheads, or people with freckles; or anything else based on physical, cosmetic differences. All that you need is a tacit if never stated limitation on who gets to be elected, and an one-party monopoly on the district, and you’re good to go.

As we are here. For the benefit of any natural born damned fools that may have wandered in: there is no South Vietnam anymore. It was conquered by North Vietnam in 1975, shortly after a Democratic Congress – yes, the same political party as Rep. Jackson-Lee’s – defunded the defense of South Vietnam, in defiance of our promises made to that unhappy country as part of the cease-fire that ended the Vietnam War. They are not living together side by side as two countries. Because, well, again, the North Vietnamese conquered the South. If Rep. Jackson-Lee likes, she could go ask Rep. Joseph Cao (R, LA-02) for the details of that event… assuming, of course, if she can make herself believe that an Asian-American can speak real English just as good as a Democrat can.

Second, and let us dispose of this right now: she’s not talking about North and South Korea. We know this for three reasons:

  • First off, she was quoting a casualty rate of 58K, which is consistent with Vietnam War American casualties but not Korean War ones;
  • Second, North and South Korea are not anywhere near the point of having normalized relations. Even by North Korean propaganda standards, which are only compatible by normal reality’s standards by the blindest accident;
  • Third: Rep. Jackson-Lee is a liberal Democratic politician, and they really are that pig-ignorant of American history.

In short: to quote a physicist friend of mine, that’s not even wrong. But it is rather offensively ignorant, racist, and even racially ignorant.

PS: Just one last point… mixing up Vietnamese with Koreans like that is, ah, well, not particularly culturally sensitive. Different culture, different ethnicity, different language groups, and well, generally just different people. Yes, Rep. Jackson-Lee, I understand that both groups commonly display epicanthic folds. There’s more to it than that.

PPS: Yes, we’re running somebody against her this year. John Faulk. Bet you that they don’t all look alike to him.

  1. I am aware of the adage about never blaming malice when stupidity will suffice, but are we certain that her side didn’t win the Vietnam War?

  2. Moe:

    Thanks for the mention. Not only are we running, we are running to win.

    This year will be different and we can all make a difference.

  3. What – conquering doesn’t count?

    BTW, Bush lied us into Vietnam too – wherever that is. Too bad the South didn’t have oil dammit! (Damn tasty pepper crab tho.) Was oil invented that long ago? I know some really old people that say they were there. They have like rallies once in a while and pray to some black hole in the ground. I don’t believe them tho – not like alien abductees. Now they should have a monument.

    And what’s all this stuff about gerrymandering? I got lots of them out in the woods. Pick up a rock & you’ll likely find a gerrymander.

    I plan to start a Back To Europe campaign, similar to Richard Pryor’s Back to Africa. Promise to send all you crackers back & see how much money rolls in. Then I’ll use the money to get the world in my head made a congressional district and run for congress.

  4. Uh, sorry. In the first place, red-headed people do not clump up, so you can’t gerrymander by red hair. And in the second place, while redheads come in for a certain degree of harassment, their collective sense of grievance is not strong enough to cause them to preferentially vote for other redheads. I know, you don’t like to connect the black thing with the stupid thing, because they will call you a “racist”. But talking about green eyes is not going to get you anywhere. Racial gerrymandering, like race hustling, and the race card, is not about appearance. It is about race.

  7. Well, now we know why Enron didn’t have any problems with their Congress-critter.
    Seems everybody else in Houston is too smart to be a Congress-critter, so they left it to this woman who could easily be out witted by two 3rd graders with a BabyRuth candy bar.

  8. -“…are we certain that her side didn’t win the Vietnam War?”

    This is precisely the point I think a lot of people are missing, and it goes to the core of how the left has managed to subvert this nation almost effortlessly. Conservatives don’t really listen to what these people say – we tend to brush B.S. like this off as pure idiocy. In fact – I believe – it’s pure ideology. That ideology may be focused on an idiotic premise, but the difference is critical.

    It’s much easier to label her an idiot – which she is, but for a different reason – than to recognize that the “victory” she’s referring to was the North’s, and the lost lives were those of the (black) kids who were sent over there after her side – the Communists – had already clearly won the war.

    She never actually says it was OUR victory – an American victory. Pushed to clarify, she will weasel-word something that sounds like that. But to me it sounds like she’s simply using history to prove that we should withdraw from the current foreign conflicts because the other side (her side – the Islamists) has already won and we just don’t want to admit it.

  9. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

    SJL is correct, if by “we” she meant the Baby Boomers and other hippies and leftists.

    They did win in Viet Nam. Unfortunately, they and the corrupt, evil machine of North Viet Nam’s military and government are the only ones who did. EVERYONE else lost, and has been paying for it for the last 35 years.

    But, yeah: lefties won. They got to foist socialism on people other than themselves. They got their moral victory and someone else had to pay the price.

    What’s not to love about that?

  10. …I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

    What’s she going to say next? That we should apologize to Thailand for dropping the A-bomb on them to end the Boer War?

  11. And let us all not forget that this is also the glittering jewel of ignorance who once while standing behind the guy driving the “Mars Rover”, you know the one on “Mars”? Asked the guy with the joystick if the guy could drive the “Mars” rover over to where the Astronauts had planted the Flag when they were there. The looks of OMG on the faces were priceless as the joystick guy says ” I beleive the Astronaunts went to the “MOON”. Maybe her crown is weaved a bit too TIGHT. I live in Houston the this woman is the never ending gift of gaffe.
    Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

  12. Too bad we crackers can’t express ourselves the way others can. Overweight. Ugly. Stupid. Tool.

  13. As some of you may remember, Sheila Jackson-Lee is the same ditso who constantly hammered George W. Bush for everything (couldn’t even brush his own teeth correctly, etc.), but who–at the same time– went EARLY to all Bush State of the Union and similar Presidential addresses in order to secure an aisle seat allowing her guaranteed maximum TV exposure with the Prez she allegedly detested! Her degree of hypocrisy is exceeded only by her levels of total incompetence and stupidity. Jackson-Lee is yet another glaring consequence of racial gerrymandering.

  14. She’s put a lame explanation up on her website: There just wasn’t time in only a five-minute speech to explain that North Viet-Nam and South Viet-Nam are one united country. But when you compare the explanation with her speech it comes off like the doctor who cut the left leg off instead of the right leg so tries to correct it by cutting off the right arm: She very clearly said North Viet-Nam and South Viet-Nam are today two countries living peacefully side by side and she very clearly said she has a problem with NORTH Viet-Nam’s civil rights record.
