Like all good poison pills, this poll from Politico/GWU looks like good news to the Democrats on the surface.  Admittedly, ‘good news’ is a slippery concept – it shows +5 GOP on the generic ballot – but that’s better than the Democrats have been managing lately and is at least no worse than the last one.  But, as always, it’s the stuff below the lede that’s the killer.  Consider:

• Never mind Obama’s 46/51 (underwater) favorable/unfavorable numbers; the real interesting numbers here are Pelosi’s (36/56) and Boehner’s (18/15).  It’s like the Democrats’ attempts to demonize Boehner have completely failed, while the Republicans’ attempts to link the Speaker to individual Democratic races has been remarkably successful.  Actually, it’s not ‘like’ that at all; that’s pretty much what happened.
• Speaking of favorable numbers: according to this poll, it works out like this: Republicans 50(!)/41, Tea Party 41/38… and the Democrats underwater at 42/50. (more…)

Jason Riley of The Wall Street Journal, on why the NAACP is so concerned with the Tea Party (a group which is even now working  to elect African-Americans to Congress – and in heavily-white districts, too*):

It’s hard to understand how an organization that says it’s devoted to “end[ing] racial disparities” finds the time to rail against tea-party populism until you grasp that the NAACP is, first and foremost, a Democratic Party organ. The NAACP is pretending that the tea party threatens the interests of blacks because the tea party in fact threatens the interests of the Democratic left. The civil rights leadership wants to discredit the movement for political reasons. And unfortunately, this partisan agenda takes priority over the many issues of consequence that confront blacks today.

[It was suggested, pre-publication, that the paragraph that was here before was just the slightest bit inflammatory - and to a point where the sheer force from the screams of outrage would probably perturb Earth's orbit.  I'll thus just all of you work out for yourselves my opinion of the current motivations of the National Association for the Advancement of the Democratic Party.  Hmm.  "NAADP."  Kind of catchy.]

I was laughing hysterically at the title of this article – “Mondale on Obama, and how he could’ve beat Reagan” – because the very idea that President Obama could have had the chops to knock down the Gipper is hysterical.  Then I actually read the article, and it was actually all about how Mondale thinks that he could have knocked down the Gipper.  So I stopped laughing.

Why?  Because Walter Mondale is 82 years old.  When I am 82, if I am saying things like this it is my fond hope that others will show me the same forbearance that I am showing now.

When your second-place candidate (Crist) is reduced to heckling the first-place candidate (RUBIO) during an actual debate you can safely assume that the second-place candidate has given up on trying to win and is now merely trying to see just how spectacular a fireball that he can generate on impact.

So, how spectacular?

Answer? Quite spectacular, really. Then again, Crist was always a bit… gassy.

Well, for given values of ‘sadness:’

Seeming to concede the race, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee doesn’t even list [Ravi] Sangisetty on its website outlining the races and candidates it’s tracking around the country.

A spokesman for the DCCC says no money is planned for the 3rd District so far.

It’s just kind of… weird.  The DCCC was all about the open seats a while back; sure, this is a R+12 district and everything, but there was a Democratic incumbent there who was popular enough to get him promoted all the way up to being the sacrificial lamb running against David Vitter in the Senate race.  They could have put some oomph behind this Sangisetty guy.  instead, they just – never even tried.

Is it the last name, I wonder?  I bet that it was the last name.

For those without video, the above is George Clooney politely telling Bill Maher – who, by the way, was almost-accurately described by Jim Treacher as being what happens when you cross “Johnny Carson with Lord Haw-Haw and dipped the result in a vat of gonorrhea*” – that in point of fact the Right has been better than the Left when it comes to Darfur relief. Which is, by the way, perfectly accurate: after all, your average Lefty activist and/or politician is militantly indifferent to the plight of any racial and/or cultural demographic that can’t cast a ballot in the next election.

But I digress. Anyway, I don’t expect that Clooney’s seen the light about the Right; I’m sure that he’s still heavy-liberal, in that special Hollywood way that they have over there. But he does seem to have grasped the same concept about humanitarian activism that U2′s Bono has: which is that if you go to conservatives, politely ask for their help, say ‘please,’ and – this is the important thing – don’t scream in their about how they’re a bunch of Nazi fascist pig-dogs; well, then. It’s all ‘Let me get my checkbook out’ and ‘Did you want us to do a press conference?’ and ‘By the way, you were great in O Brother, Where Art Thou?**.’

Crazy, huh?

Which is to say, “screwed.”

Yes, I can tell that you’re all just as depressed as I am that the guy who gave the names of 1,800 Afghani patriots to a bunch of women-hating, gay-hating, Jew-hating, and American-hating violent terrorist scumbags is discovering that there’s a line between ‘romantic bad-boy sticking it to the Man’ and ‘to be among the enemies-general of humankind, to be dealt with as wolves are.’ And that he’s on the wrong side of it.  Yup, you’re all ready to weep at the unfairness of it all.

Not that I want the guy dead, or anything. Life in jail will do.

P.J. O’Rourke:

Using the metaphor of Michael Vick for the Democratic party leadership implies they are people with a capacity for moral redemption who want to call good plays on the legislative gridiron. They aren’t. They don’t. The reason is simple. They hate our guts.

I mean, my mom is a Democrat, and she’s a very nice person who happily watches my kids so that I can attend various and sundry GOP events. There are plenty of Ordinary, Decent Democrats: it’s just their legislators who are largely scum wearing business clothes. Frustrating that they continue to run roughshod over my mom, or your Uncle Bill, or your cousin Angie… but haven’t we all been there, really?

Still, vote Republican:

This is not an election on November 2. This is a restraining order. Power has been trapped, abused and exploited by Democrats. Go to the ballot box and put an end to this abusive relationship. And let’s not hear any nonsense about letting the Democrats off if they promise to get counseling.

Especially if you’re one of those Ordinary, Decent Democrats. It’s the first step towards getting your self-respect back.
