  1. If you think the song itself is depressing, consider the circumstances of its creation. Otis Redding recorded it just three days before his death in a plane crash (along with five of his seven bandmates) at the age of 26. Reportedly he claimed that he had come up with a whole new style for himself, of which this song was to be the first (and as it turned out, the only) example. He had recorded enough material in the last few months of his life that three entire studio albums were released posthumously.
