So… Delta Green: Through a Glass, Darkly.

It’s the latest Delta Green* novel, which got funded via Kickstarter.  The electronic version is supposedly going out today to backers, with the hardcopy being available in about a week or so: I totally missed this one, so I ain’t getting either until they make either available to regular buyers.  Can’t wait: I rarely buy book tie-ins, but my appetite for Mythos stuff is nigh-insatiable.

Above a certain level of quality, of course.  Some of you probably know what I mean already, and the rest of you are fortunate not to.

PS: Ken Hite’s Cthulhu 101 came in the mail last week.  Damned funny and damned useful: there’s stuff in there that I missed.

PPS: “Philosophy,” a DG story, via The Unspeakable Oath.

*For those unfamiliar with the game: Call of Cthulhu meets secret government anti-Mythos conspiracy.  Made out of Crystalline Awesome with tightly-woven WIN inserts.

Pssst! Maxine Waters (D, CA)!

Just thought I’d let you know: about this?

The CBC is trying to help by organizing job fairs across the country. [Congresswoman] Waters also wants to help by putting more pressure on the big banks to help with mortgages.

“If they don’t come up with loan modifications and keep people in their homes that they’ve worked so hard for, we’re going to tax them out of business,” Waters said.

#rsrh Sarah Palin runs!

…in marathon: Sarah Palin runs half-marathon incognito in Iowa. (Via Drudge)

It’s actually a very nice human interest piece, which is why it’s kind of a shame that I have to tack on a polite request that the Sarah Palin whatever-it-is stop playing will-she, won’t-she games with running for President and just declare one way or the other.  Mucking about with the regular media or pundits is fine; but this game has been steadily more annoying among New Media types for the last… two months or so, I’m guessing/estimating.  And none of this has been improved by the impenetrable media shield that Palin’s staff has over any and all interactions with their patron.  And when I say ‘impenetrable’ I’m explicitly including ‘light and oxygen’ in that metaphor.  I like Sarah Palin just fine, but if she’s actually planning to get the Republican nomination then this is no way to run a campaign. Everybody chilling?

Because I’m chilling.  Got The Hot Gate: Troy Rising III on the iPad (never say that Baen Books doesn’t cover all the angles when it comes to taking your money), kids are quiet, there’s a cold beer waiting…

Watch, I just jinxed it.

Where Penelope Trunk eats the pain…

…of the defenders of non-science graduate school programs.

I’ve mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: almost finishing grad school was a heck of a better career move for me than actually finishing it would have been.  The pay was better, I had more options for jobs, and prospective employers perked right up when I frankly told them that the odds of me going back to grad school under the circumstances* were somewhere between slim and none.

So if you can manage to flee grad school without too much in the way of student loans…

*Nothing spectacular.  Beer.  Women.  A certain arrogance (yes, I know, how shocking).  It ended… well, not poorly: got a wife and a decent career out of it.  But it ended fairly dramatically.

#rsrh CA Dem campaign treasurer arrested* for mail fraud.

Well, this sounds interesting:

A prominent Democratic campaign treasurer who works for federal, state and O.C. lawmakers including U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Rep. Loretta Sanchez and state Assemblymen Lou Correa and Jose Solorio has been arrested by the FBI on suspicion of mail fraud, The Orange County Register has learned.

U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesman Thom Mrozek confirmed Saturday afternoon that Kinde Durkee of Burbank-based Durkee and Associates, was arrested by the FBI on a criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento. Special Agent Steve Dupre of the bureau’s Sacramento office said she was arrested in connection with her position as a campaign treasurer.

The Democratic hypocrisy of DeLauro & Greenberg.

Rosa DeLauro: Connecticut Democratic Congresswoman.  Married to Stanley Greenberg, Democratic strategist and former Clinton adviser.  Both credibly linked to the biotech megacorporation Monsanto – I mention this not because I care, but it never hurts to remind the netroots that they’re brazen hypocrites when it comes to their supposed opposition to GM foods – and former landlords to then-DCCC chair (and current Chicago mayor) Rahm Emanuel.  Although ‘landlord’ should really apply to people who charge rent to their tenants, I suppose – particularly when the tenant had the ability to steer fat contracts to the landlord’s polling firm.  Ach, well, we’ll save that investigation for 2013.  It’ll give Issa something to do after he finishes burning out the rot in the Justice Department.

But I digress. (more…)

Movie of the Week: X-Men: First Class.

I did in fact like X-Men: First Class: it was honestly made, had good actors in it, and didn’t suffer from being a prequel where you know how it’s all going to turn out in the end.  All in all, not as awesome as Captain America, but then that’s kind of unfair.  It’s coming out next week; I look forward to watching it again.

And so, adieu to Them! Which was also honestly made and had good actors in it.  Plus, well, Them! (more…)

Gerry Connolly (D, VA) concedes VA in 2012.

Shocking.  I mean that literally: the control chip must have shorted out, or something.  Representative Connolly finally admitted something that we all already knew: forget about what the 2008 map looked like.  This is going to be a 2004 election, or maybe a 2000 election:

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said if the 2012 presidential election was held today, President Barack Obama wouldn’t win Virginia, a state he carried in 2008.

Speaking on local Washington radio station WTOP Friday, Connolly said, ”In my opinion, no, today he would not win the state.”

But, with more than a year before Election Day, Connolly said Obama still has time to regain the momentum he had in the last election.

Indeed, he has time.  Whether he will have the opportunity or the ability to regain that momentum is another, much more entertaining, question.

You gotta watch out for those kinesiology professors.

It’s the study of human movement, after all – so you know what that means?  It means that they know how to cut you, that’s what it means.  Seriously, there’s a PhD out there on the run today, riding outlaw… and he has nothing to lose. Dr. Stephen J. Kinzey, wanted for meth dealing, and subject of one of the better understatements that you’ll read today:

“To have an associate professor who is a member of the Devils Diciples and allegedly dealing methamphetamine is quite alarming. I mean, it’s unusual to say the least,” Sheriff Rod Hoops said at a news conference in San Bernardino.

Here’s Kinzey’s Twitter account, by the way – sad to say, though, he kind of looks… not exactly like a meth dealer, but like the kind of guy that it would maybe not surprise you to hear that he was arrested for dealing meth.

Via Wombat-socho, who raised an excellent point: if you want a good cover identity to hide the fact that you deal meth, ‘kinesiology professor’ works.
