Tom McClintock warns: the future of America is California.

ack when REAGAN was governor, that verb would have been ‘promises.’

I originally blogged about this speech by Rep. Tom McClintock (R, CA) to the Council for National Policy over at AoSHQ*, but it is simply too good not to share.  Tom’s in full Post-Apocalypse Survival mode in this speech, and you will not find a dull word in it:

I want to welcome this groundbreaking scientific expedition to the savage lands of the Left Coast. You are here in California to answer an important theoretical question and now you have your answer.

Yes, this is what Barack Obama’s second term would look like.

Study it. Fear it. And then go home and make sure that it never happens to the rest of the country.

And that’s just the intro.  The rest of the three-page speech is just like the above.

I don’t want to summarize Tom McClintock’s speech too much – I’d rather you read it – but the basic themes of it can be expressed in three bullet points:

  • California was great, once.
  • Then Californians let liberal Democrats take over the government, whereupon everything went to pot.
  • California Republicans need to stop acting like less annoying versions of California Democrats.

The first two points seem relatively straightforward; the third I am not cognizant enough of Californian politics  to assess properly.  Particularly since McClintock’s fourth, not-quite-stated bullet point is:

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger should be taken out front and beaten with sticks.

Which I suppose is to be expected of the man, really.  Still, it’s an excellent speech to read.

  1. Tom’s right about point three. The CRP often seems to think the only way we can win is to be “moderate” and “bipartisan,” yet the number of times stupid measures from the legislature get smacked down via public initiatives should tell them there’s an audience willing to listen to a party that’s not insane.

Aside: I made a terrible mistake voting for Arnie instead of Tom in the 2003 recall election. It’s me and those who voted likewise who should get the stick treatment for being so dumb.

  2. Well, wasn’t Arnie an improvement over Grey Davis? I was living out there at the time, but I wasn’t an official resident, and I returned to my native Georgia soon after, so I may not be remembering accurately.

  3. Arnie ran on a lark. McClintock ran, and I voted for him, knowing that Arnie would govern as Maria (Shriver/Kennedy) would tell him. Many folks I know regretted not voting for McClintock….

McClintock accurately describes how our GOP votes. When they aren’t voting like northeastern rinos, they are sending out emails like this….

    http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2011/04/15/orange-county-republican-party-member-circulates-racist-e-mail-targeted-at-president-obama/

or having Meg Whitman run as an archconservative against Steve Poizner (who may have been able to give California voters a real look at a conservative), but with the knowledge that she had a maid in the closet…

No, us poor shlubs who are left in California, who can’t sell their houses and leave, have to continue to hope that we get some decent conservatives running here next time.

  4. Moe, with all due respect, it’s the same stump speech Tom McClintock has given since at least 1999, albeit with a few updates on what’s happened since. But give him credit, at least he didn’t mention the “Gold Medallion All-Electric home!”

And frankly, St. Tom is nowhere near the real cause of California’s issues than anyone else is. You see, CA could ramp up spending as long as it could, and as much as it wanted, because the rest of this nation was convinced the good life can be had in CA and moved there.

Until, oh, about 20 years ago. Now, the rest of the nation is doing just fine living reasonably close to home and obtaining the same sort of good life (such as it is in 2011) it could only previously get by moving to CA.

CA’s problem is it still thinks it can get the rest of the nation to move there and help pay the freight. The sooner CA (and Tom McClintock) realizes this is not the case, the sooner it can more credibly cut spending and adjust to current realities.

  5. Not to mention . . .

    Not to mention

    The fact that . . .

    The fact that

    Reasonable people . . .

    Reasonable people

    Are fleeing . . .

    Are fleeing

    The state in droves.

    The state in droves.

  6. Tom McClintock is one of the few great elected officials that stands on morals and ideals. I follow him closely and always enjoy reading his blogs and op-eds.

You can always see what Tom is writing at http://www.tommcclintock.com or find him on twitter @tommcclintock

  7. I’m one of the proud 13% that voted for McClintock. I’m also one of those that has fled the state.

  8. I also voted for McClintock and fled the state. Sold my house in Lodi for $320,000 in 2005, and high tailed it. Now it is worth maybe $120-$130. (150 gang members within 2 blocks and 1 murder/year average within 1 block) I find it hard to believe anybody really wants to stay behind.

Arnie and the reset of the check pants country club idiots rhinos are as much to blame as the limosine liberals.

I left for lower taxes, better schools, less crime and more sanity. Boogity Boogity boogity, Amen
