Mitt Romney flip-flops a grenade into illegal immigration debate.

How do I put this?  Actually, that’s easy: with malice aforethought.  Below are two key quotes of Mitt Romney with regard to his discussion with the Washington Examiner about illegal immigration:

I listened to Lindsey Graham the other day… I went down to Florida and met with Jeb Bush…

Yeah.  As The Examiner put it – succinctly – “Lindsey Graham. Jeb Bush. If you are an “attrition-through-enforcement” conservative on illegal immigration, then this answer is probably setting off alarms.” (more…)

#rsrh QotD, Sean Trende brings the DOOM edition.

Sean Trende, in the process of noting that, really, Obama’s numbers are grotesquely bad right now, mentioned independent voters:

Given the enthusiasm gap between the parties, the 2012 electorate will probably be roughly split between Republicans and Democrats. Independent voters will therefore hold the key to the election.

Consider these three 2010 Senate challengers frequently cited as examples of candidates who are too extreme to win. It’s a little-known fact that Ken Buck won independents by 16 points in Colorado. In Nevada, Sharron Angle won them by four points. Even Christine O’Donnell, who is something of the ultimate warning sign against Tea Party excess, lost independents only by three points. They all lost their races in large part because they faced Democrat-heavy electorates. Had the electorates been evenly split between the parties, all three would have run very close races.

Whatever their faults, Romney, Gingrich, and Perry are not Christine O’Donnell-style candidates.

#rsrh Ooh! Ooh! I know the answer to this one, Lanny Davis!

Davis, former Special Counsel to former President Bill Clinton, thinks “it’s a mystery why the White House and President Barack Obama are not actively defending Holder from congressional demands that he step down.”  It’s not a mystery at all: it’s because the White House and President Barack Obama know darn well that Eric Holder is as guilty as sin when it comes to Operation Fast & Furious.

As guilty, in fact, as your former boss was, Davis*.

#rsrh Thomas Walker’s political – fetish porn. (Commentary NSFW)

(Via Hot Air Headlines) I know that the guy’s hoping for a strong reaction to his petulant piece about how people shouldn’t send charitable care packages to soldiers.  Alas, I’m a bit of a sadist, so I will merely chuckle and note: dear Lord, but the things that people will resort to in order to get an erection.

Also: Soldiers’ Angels.  God knows that they need all the ones that they can get.

Jerry Nadler picks Occupy Wall Street over NY-08′s constituents.

(H/T: JWF) Rep. Nadler is apparently quite upset that the cops cleared out the fetid, disease-ridden plague pit that had replaced what was once (and is now becoming again) a decent enough public-private urban park in lower Manhattan: he’s insisting – insisting! – that the Attorney General take time out from Holder’s current busy schedule*  to investigate the cops for ‘misconduct.’  It would seem that Nadler feels that the Occupiers’ propensity for incessant drum circles, rampant drug use, rape coverups, and of course defecating on police cars should all fall under the category of “First Amendment rights” – and that the cops should take seriously the complaints of a bunch of illegal squatters with Mommy/Daddy issues in Nadler’s district than they should the complaints of actual residents and taxpayers of said district.

I politely – politely! – would like to suggest to said residents and taxpayers that it may be time for a switch in, shall we say, point of view?  And while normally I’d just settle for suggesting that NY-08 Democrats toss out Nadler in their primary and replace him with someone more sensible, in this case I’d have to ask: how would you know that the new Democrat would be any smarter about keeping the Occupy movement at arm’s length, and in compliance with NYC’s various health and legal codes? – Because I’ll tell you this: we’re going to run a Republican in NY-08 next year, and he or she is not going to be a supporter of Occupy Wall Street.  We in the GOP have this thing about humans leaving excrement in the street, you see: we’re against it. I see that the New York Times is encouraging organlegging again.

Oh, dear.  “Why Selling Kidneys Should Be Legal.”

Yes.  Yes, by all means, let us establish that one’s internal organs have an official market value.  Let’s get to a point where Larry Niven’s “The Jigsaw Man” is even closer to segueing from dystopian science fiction to something that will give the People’s Republic of China even more ‘helpful’ ideas.  It’ll be a hoot.

For a while.  As the man says: everybody gets sick sometimes.

Reviewing Obama’s sparsely-attended class warfare speech… oh, SUGAR.

Said speech was in Osawatomie Texas no, wait, he meant Kansas, where President Barack Obama hopes to recreate a little electoral magic represented by Teddy Roosevelt’s speech in 1910… to wit, splitting the Republican vote and thus getting a Democrat elected.  The speech itself is pretty mediocre, even by this President’s standards: but then, if you’re looking for deathless prose then you’re following the wrong Presidential administration.  As Ace of Spades notes, President Obama seems to have a definite problem with this entire capitalism thing; to which I would add that this is really a perfectly normal position to take… if you are a person who has spent his entire adult life being paid from an account funded by other people’s tax money.

Also, it is probably mean-spirited of me to note that the three most obvious major differences between Obama’s speech and Teddy Roosevelt’s are these:

  1. Teddy Roosevelt knew who John Brown was (I understand that Osawatomie Brown is a sore topic for Democrats, of course).
  2. Teddy Roosevelt started his speech by endorsing the notion that throwing out politicians who broke campaign promises was a darn good idea (I understand that Obama’s habits of routinely breaking his word is a sore topic for Democrats, of course).
  3. Teddy Roosevelt could draw a crowd (30,000 vs. Obama’s 1,200).  Smart of the White House to pick a high school gym, though: that way they don’t have to worry about too much in the way of open space.

#rsrh The subtle campaign ad of Mark Reed (CA-30).

I may be using ‘subtle’ in a somewhat ironic fashion.

Mark Reed is running in a redrawn district featuring incumbent Democrats Brad Sherman and Howard Berman. Come, I will conceal nothing from you: dropping a nuke in your campaign ad is, shall we say, controversial.  On the other hand, Reed has absolutely nothing to lose in provoking Sherman & Berman into having a fight over who is more pro-Israel, which they were going to do anyway.  On the gripping hand, I linked to it, didn’t I?  Means it worked, more or less.

Moe Lane

PS: If you’re wondering, the primary is nonpartisan and the top two candidates go to the general.  The polling is old and suspect, but suggests that Reed has a shot at second place.  Interesting days.
