“What game to buy on Steam?” quandary.

So I’m looking at my Steam account (moe.lane, by the way; I understand that people can friend each other on that service, or something) and I’m seeing that LA Noire is being offered at 75% off ($12.49) and Batman: Arkham City is being offered at 50% off ($24.99).  I can manage to swing one of these; anybody got an opinion?  I like the noir genre, and I play action games; I’ve also heard people rave on and on about both of these.  Feedback?  The sale ends at about noon January 2nd.

  1. Go Noire now, and Arkham later 🙂 By the time you get around to Arkham, there will probably be a BIGGER sale. Oh, and Orcs Must Die is a fantastic funny twist on the tower defense genre, especially for $3.74!

  2. incidentally, I do a search for moe.lane or moe lane and I get nothing, and a search for just moe has 5000+ hits. On the other hand, there is only one HeartbreakRidge, so if you are inclined to send ME a friend request, that would be peachy.

  3. I checked with my daughter, a huge gaming fan & she shops at Steam as well. She mentioned that LA Noire has a lot of anti-American bias on display, such as a character who is a WWII vet, who espouses attitudes similar to Tom Hanks slandering of American troops from WWII, she suggested you go with Batman.

  4. I found LA Noire remarkably underwhelming. I rarely sell games back and, when I do, it’s usually not until 6+ months after the release. I think I sold Noire back two weeks after it came out, such was my disappointment.

  5. LA Noire was fun, but I got sidetracked, and it never really called me to get back to it. Looks really pretty, and it’s a pretty detailed recreation of 50s LA. Haven’t played Orcs Must Die yet, but at $3.74, it just went into the ‘pile of STEAM games I buy every holiday and mostly don’t get around to playing”.

BTW, Bastion is also worth playing, at $5, if you haven’t played it yet.

  6. Let me put it this way: if you adored LA Confidential, then LA Noire is a MUST. (especially for a measly $12.50)

  7. LA Noir was interesting, and a few of the cases were fairly compelling, but much like steve holt (STEVE HOLT!) I found it to be underwhelming – not bad, just not great. That said, if you’re into mysteries and the noir thing appeals to you then it could be worth $12.50. Arkham City is, well, Arkham City. If you enjoyed the first Arkham game, and who didn’t, then this one is a no brainer.

  8. Moe, your FR did show you as moe.lane, so no clue why searching for you directly did not pop you right up. I just use Steam, I don’t understand it. I think you can understand that. 🙂

  9. The noir setting really appealed to me and I was excited to play LA Noir, but there just doesn’t seem to be any kind of story to it. You just solve random cases. I was hoping for some intrigue and a strong story arc. I played for a while and then put it back on the shelf. $12 might be worth it for the novelty factor.

  10. So, stupid question before I break down and buy the Batman game: how do you get the Catwoman character? Does it come with the Steam version?

  11. From poking around it looks like all new copies get Catwoman.

countrydoc: you must not have been playing long enough. There’s a definite character arc for Cole Phelps (tracing back to his WWII experience and that of his unit) and the Black Dahlia arc was pretty good too. If you are fairly obsessive about talking to people and reading what you find laying around, it oozes atmosphere.
