Buzzfeed, May 20th, 2012: “Big Money Dries Up For Obama Campaign”

Donations to President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign declined sharply in April, as many big-dollar contributors hit the legal maximum, a BuzzFeed analysis of Federal Election Commission data shows.

Most of Obama’s drop is attributable to a decline in contributions of more than $500, which fell by more than $9 million. Many of Obama’s top donors have already hit the legal $2500 maximum to the campaign, which — along with an apparent failure to recruit a new cadre of wealthy supporters — may account for the decline.

…the Obama fundraising effort has already hit its high-water mark.  They will continue to get smaller donors, but the larger donors have either maxed out or have abandoned the incumbent.    In contrast, the Romney campaign has just gotten started.  A few more months like April, and Barack Obama might suddenly rediscover his love of public financing for elections.

The president is making his campaign official slightly earlier than is typical for an incumbent so he can get a jump on fund-raising in a season that’s likely to shatter all records. Obama’s team has been asking campaign bundlers to raise $350,000 each, no easy task since campaign finance laws limit gifts to $2,500 per donor. Two sources tell CNN the campaign team hopes that in total their bundlers will raise $500 million, leaving the campaign to raise another $500 million and amass a record-breaking $1 billion war chest.

The President will not raise a billion dollars for the 2012 election.  At least, not without half of his campaign staff being indicted for various fraud-related practices in 2013.

Yes, I know that the man raised almost $750 million in 2008.  The economy wasn’t in the tank back then, either.  And the base hadn’t had their guy break his promises to them on a daily basis for three years.  And the populace in general hadn’t had three years’ worth of Change That You Can Believe In, or whatever the phrase was back then…

Normally I wouldn’t feel the need to point this out, but damn: I pretty much called it there, huh?
