It must have been sung earlier than 1944, because Sam the piano player in in the movie “Casablanca” (1942) plays this number. Actually, it’s the first tune you see him play, and if it made an appearance in the film, I’m guessing it was probably already a popular song in circulation. *shrug* Not that it really matters…
