It took me a couple of years to realize that Linda Ronstadt’s “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” wass actually a cover of an original by Zevon. (And Ronstadt sang backup vocals on it.) I like them both, but I prefer Zevon’s version:

I met a girl at the Rainbow Bar
She asked me if I’d beat her.
She took me back to the Hyatt House
… I don’t want to talk about it.

Actually, I’ll take the hit on the lack of research. Generally, when I hear a slower-paced version of a song I’m familiar with I assume that it’s the original (For example, Simon and Garfunkle’s “Scarborough Fair” vs. Queensryche’s version of it).
