…Anthony Weiner contemplating running for NYC Mayor anyway?

I… don’t know what to say.

Could former Rep. Anthony Weiner be preparing for a political comeback?

The Democrat’s latest filing with the New York City Campaign Finance Board, published Tuesday, may send some subtle messages.

His mayoral campaign committee, created ahead of his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination in 2005, reported spending just one dollar shy of $37,000 in the last six months. It brought in $27,400 in the same period, largely through a transfer from a previous political committee.

Actually, I do know what to say: if this happens, I will never have a lack of things to write about in 2013. Mike Bloomberg’s term-limited, so fortunately I don’t have to contemplate the ghastly thought that even a man caught showing college girls his genitals would be an improvement on the current mayor.  That would have been practically a test-to-destruction of the “Even a ham sandwich” principle.  On the other hand: the Democratic slate is pitiful, all on its own.  As near as I can tell, the front-runner there is City Council Speaker Christine Quinn… and a Democratic primary where she faces off against a guy who exposes himself to young girls would be a thing of malignant beauty.  On the gripping hand; all of the party’s slates are pitiful.  I can’t see Weiner running as a Republican, per se, but I can see him running as an Independent* pretty easily…

*Although Anthony Weiner is brazen enough to try to get on the Republican line in 2013, and the NY GOP is messed-up enough to let him.  God, but I hate fusion systems.

  1. I used to think comebacks by properly disgraced pols was a D phenomenon, but then Mark Sanford is running for the House in SC. Wish they would all go away (especially eliot spitzer)

  2. Hey, Alcee Hasting never let an impeachment for corruption stand in the way of servicing the public.
