…It may be time to start playing another game in my Steam library.

I just spent an hour exploring the question If you take your highest level Skyrim character, take away all her items, drop her on one corner of the map, then start running to the other diagonal corner… what happens?

Well, what happens is that you dive into a lot of caves when you hear dragons roar, up until the point where you scrounge some actual armor.  You also end up killing a lot of bears and sabre cats.  I had forgotten the joys of hiding in general, but there’s nothing like suddenly remembering that all of your health potions were on the desk at home to make a person appreciate the art of not starting fights with giants.

But, yeah, new game time.

  1. I usually wait until after I’ve figured out how to go “off the map” … and whether I can exploit being off the map in any way….

but yeah. Time for new game. Fortunately, IIRC, the next bioshock is up soon.

  2. I hope Infinite retains Ken Levine’s typical even handed portrayal of the warring factions. The ads and art so far have me worried that he’s made Columbia as straw man.

  3. I’m not sure what mods you use, but I suggest these to liven up your next characters.

Alternate Start: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9557 – Build your character and choose -mostly- how you start your Skyrim adventure. You can come by boat, either successfully, or via shipwreck. You could start the game at your campsite in the mountains. Perhaps you fancy a new start as someone robbed and left for dead? You can also start as a member of the Companions. The mod is even set up to make sure you aren’t instantly “on” the Main Quest path. You actually have to go investigate the rumors of Dragons to start the main quest proper.

Frostfall: Hypothermia Camping Survival: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/11163 – exactly what it sounds like: you can freeze to death if you decide to go swimming in the northern seas, or spend all your time in blizzards, or wander around in your birthday suit.. a VERY interesting mod that makes you really appreciate fires and finally makes firewood useful.

Realistic Needs and Diseases: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26228 – Now all the food you find lying around is actually useful for something other than atmosphere, or as fodder for your “Collect ALL the Sweet-rolls in Skyrim” self-imposed quest. Food drink, sleep, and any diseases actually make a difference. Best used on a new character.

These totally change your games. Having to actually worry about eating, sleeping, and paying attention to the weather makes the game totally different.
