New KSer: Torment: “Tides of Numenera.”

When I saw the “Torment: Tides of Numenera” (Planescape-ish videogame, via Penny Arcade) KickStarter, I found it interesting enough…

…but this is what really sold me on the concept:

Collinsapology

“Colin McComb will issue a video apology for the most embarrassing work of his career: 2nd Edition D&Ds Complete Book of Elves.” I checked with my wife – she’s the AD&D DM of the household – and yea, indeed, that work was remarkably bad.  Apparently, and according to the book, there was no better way to spend one’s life than to be an elf; failure to be one was a cruel, cruel fate.

(pause)

Well, I guess that explains the Thalmor.

While there was some interesting ideas in the book for the most part it was just a waste of money and time. And yes sorry to admit I bought it and read it and most of the few interesting ideas never got used.

Awesome! Wasteland 2 looks so good, I backed P:T with another wad of cash, so welcome!

Lord British is also doing a kickstarter for a non-Ultima Ultima. I don’t think I’ll kick it, he hasn’t proved to me he can make a playable game in twenty years or so (has it _really_ been over 20 years since Ultima VII? Sheesh), but it may be worth checking out in a year or so.

I’d attribute the Thalmor more to GURPS’ take on “dark elves”.

That splatbook was one of the worst in 2e AD&D. (Which is saying something.) Most of the classes were pretty decent, just unbalanced. Much of the rest was horrible cheese. The example that springs to mind for me is the Sashling.

I liked Torment:Planescape a lot more than the Baldur’s Gate franchise. And they’ve certainly put a strong team together.

The fact that it’s the spiritual successor to the best RPG ever isn’t enough?

Also, glad to see Penny Arcade was able to get your attention: https://twitter.com/tomabella/status/309406302080217090

What I don’t like about the Lord British game is the idea of having to buy a house and pay taxes on it. Torment sounds interesting, will have to think about it.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about ” emperors new clothes”.? Table top game KS project, It’s either a strange art project, odd practical joke or an interesting marketing tactic. Not sure which yet.

Heh. Can’t say I disagree with that, but then again my name is that of one of the leaders of the Noldorin Elves, so.
