Bill Daley (D) quits Illinois Governor’s race.

This will make it slightly harder for the Democrats to keep the seat, by the way*.

Bill Daley abruptly ended his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor today, telling the Tribune that a lifetime in politics had not prepared him for the “enormity” of his first run for office and the challenge of leading the state through difficult times.

“…the last six weeks or so have been really tough on me, struggling with this. Is this really me? Is this really what I want to spend my next five to nine years doing? And is this the best thing for me to do at this stage of my life?” [Daily] said. “I’ve come to the conclusion that this isn’t the best thing for me.”

Or he’s about to get indicted. This is, after all, Illinois that we’re talking about.

*At least, it would make it harder in any other state. In Illinois? …Hard to say, really. It all depends on whether or not the Illinois Combine has decided to switch out an ostensibly Democratic governor for an ostensibly Republican one.  Daley may have simply been told that it’s not his turn yet.

Or he’s about to get indicted: Again, it’s Illinois.

  1. I’d say it’s harder since Daley was going to beat Quinn. But I don’t think either Daley or Quinn would have won against a decent GOP challenger like Rutherford.

I’m hoping Gary Sinise runs for Governor. He’s from Illinois after all. I’m assuming he still lives there.

    1. I’m assuming the combine wants to put a nominal Repub in to take the blame for the coming “haircut” to the state pension funds (and taxpayers) because this place is beyond boned.

Sorta like how Christie got Jersey.

      1. But will the Republican have the cajones to take on the Unions like Christie did ( initially)?
Gary Sinise for Governor! We need an actor Governor.

        1. I have no objection to Sinise .. the Lieutenant Dan Band can play the inaugural.

I don’t think the divided, gangrenous, snakebit cluster-{copulation} that is the IL-GOP has the sense to run him, and would most likely flee if he decided to run and got the nom.

          1. A popular actor like him would be a godsend for any struggling state party. But of course Sinise is probably too “conservative” for Illinois.

          2. I haven’t done any research on the demographics, but .. I doubt Sinise’s conservatism would be a problem outside the urban areas, and .. as I am reading him as a strong-military-conservative, he may even make some inroads there.

Lots of young folks see joining the armed services as one way out of the rotting urban cores, and have some influence over the family they leave behind, eh?

Not *much*, but .. every bit helps.
