Happy Blog-Birthday, @aceofspadeshq!

Ace of Spades HQ is ten years old today.  Wow; time flies, huh?

Moe Lane

PS: I don’t remember my first blog post, given that it was on Tacitus, back in the day.  Shoot, I don’t even know if my first RedState.com post still exists (it would have been dot-org, at that). As for MoeLane… dang.  I don’t know that one, either.  I was importing some posts in the beginning from another site of mine.

Maybe I should have written some of this stuff down, huh?

In the mail (and just finished): “Armageddon Girl.”

For those who do not remember, Armageddon Girl is a superhero novel by C.J. Carella that got published via the assistance of Kickstarter.  It came in the mail last weekend, and I finally got to read it today.  Finished it in one sitting: it’s a good, fast read that draws heavily from the pulp and Silver Age eras in its portrayal of superheroes.  If you like the genre, you should like this book; I did.

Check it out. Note that it’s four bucks on Kindle.

Whitetail deer: I wonder what this enclosure is? National Zoo cheetahs: NOM NOM NOM.

To quote Larry Niven: think of this as evolution in action.

Two cheetahs at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo have met with some unexpected prey. The result was predictable.

Zoo officials say a white- tailed deer was killed by the cheetahs after it apparently jumped into their enclosure on Friday. A spokeswoman calls it “a normal and expected reaction” by the carnivorous big cats.

Meet David Campbell, New Hampshire state Democrat: “The ducks should have moved.”

Yeah, it’s about what you think.

[Retired USMVC officer James] Murphy said he had just tossed the ducks some crackers when he spotted Campbell’s dark sedan approaching from a side parking lot near the hotel entrance.

“All of a sudden, this 5 Series BMW comes up, it’s going about 15 miles an hour, and then when he gets to the ducks, it’s not like it even slowed down,” Murphy said.

“It just crushed all of the ducks.” Continue reading Meet David Campbell, New Hampshire state Democrat: “The ducks should have moved.”

Jewish Lefty site defends Jew-baiter by… accusing Righty critics of anti-Semitism.

Did you get all of that? If not, Ed Driscoll can walk you through it.  Basically, the Jewish Daily Forward thinks that the smartest way to defend “Pajama Boy” (guess that they didn’t get the MiniTrue memo that he’s a joke) is to accuse mockers of being anti-Semites. Which is… awkward, because Pajama Boy forgot the first rule of Social Media: “NEVER WRITE ANYTHING IN COLLEGE THAT YOU’LL HAVE TO FURTIVELY DELETE LATER.*”  In this particular case, being linked to a school paper that specifically targeted Jews for ridicule and hate speech**. “How the Tyrannosaur Got Her Arms.”

This was NOT written by me.  This was written by my wife, based on a new Christmas present for our eldest (and an old Christmas present for our eldest*).  I am merely reproducing it (with her gracious permission) for all y’all’s delectation.

Illinois #obamacare supporter discovers the implications of ‘Embrace the suck.’

Stop John D. Thomas if you’ve heard this one:

For the first time in my professional life, I am in the position that I have to buy my own health care insurance. I had heard people were having difficulty with the process, but recently I have written and edited a lot of information about the Affordable Care Act and the new health insurance exchanges, so I felt familiar with the territory and ready to sign up. In addition, my wife is an attorney with a master’s degree in education, so I knew that with our two minds on the case, the process would be a snap.

Guess what happened? Go ahead. Guess.

And then two days after we started, our patience snapped, and we decided to forgo buying insurance off of the exchange to purchase a policy on the open market at about five times the rate we were quoted on the exchange.

Quote of the Day, Ya Got Trouble, Right Here in West Virginia… edition.

Trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with D and that stands for “Democrat.”

In a Sheraton ballroom, Ms. [Natalie] Tennant, West Virginia’s [Democratic] secretary of state, listened to Michelle Obama urge donors to write “a big old fat check” to her and other women running for the Senate.

But back home, where President Obama is deeply unpopular, Ms. Tennant’s campaign quickly sought to wriggle out of the embrace of the White House, insisting to the local news media that “what the first lady said is not an endorsement.”
