The Obama administration wishes to wreck your quiet enjoyment of March Madness.

This is not really about basketball, of course..

As hoop heads across the country prepare for the Big Dance, President Barack Obama’s administration is banking on a new March Madness-focused campaign to help boost Obamacare enrollment.

To coincide with the start of NCAA basketball tournament, a White House official says the administration is launching an all-encompassing push around the annual basketball bonanza that will feature athletes, coaches, and others, in hopes of spurring more Americans to sign up for health care before the March 31 deadline.

…but it might surprise you that neither is this really about Obamacare, either. After all, the deadline’s in two weeks; there is really no way that the Obama administration can boost the final sign-up numbers for Obamacare to something approximating the original target goals. So why are they trying? Well, they are trying because this administration has never wanted any of us to have private spaces in our lives, anywhere.  Everything must be political; nothing may be free of subtext. If it’s not political, it’s superfluous to their needs. So anywhere that the administration can intrude, they will intrude.

This is unreasonable. This is also an increasingly common tactic found among the Left, sure, but it is no less obnoxious for all that.  And this is not a tactic that its Leftist adherents wish to abandon, either. My RedState colleague and friend Erick Erickson has a saying about same-sex marriage*: you will be made to care.  You don’t get to be a neutral, you don’t get to opt out of this, and they will blame you for your wanting to be left alone. Wrecking your quiet enjoyment of a formerly-nonpolitical element of life is a meritorious act to a certain class of activist, and they will not voluntarily give up that rush of self-righteous advocacy.

Don’t like this?  Well, I recommend that you start getting rude back. I know, I know: I’m telling a group of people who end political their protests by policing the area and picking up all the trash to be deliberately impolite to their opponents, however uncouth. Unfortunately, if you don’t push back, they’ll keep doing it. Better to inflict a little public embarrassment now than rather more later, right?

*He and I disagree on that particular policy position, by the way.

  1. I disagree. The President can only wreck it for me if I choose to let him wreck it for me. I know you have to follow stuff like this because it’s your job, but as for me, I find I can easily ignore it with minimal effort.

    1. “The President can only wreck it for me if I choose to let him wreck it for me.”

      For now.

  2. Fortunately, I don’t give a flying {copulation} about March Madness. It is, therefore, not ruined for me. Now, if he tried to inject Obamacare into St. Patrick’s Day …

I find Erick’s position more annoying than gay marriage activists .. but that’s not something that needs discussing here.

    1. I spent a large portion of my formative years in central New York, hence not caring just doesn’t work for me. Hence I believe Joe Biden has given the correct answer exactly once in his life: When asked ‘Duke or North Carolina?’, he correctly answered ‘Syracuse’.

  3. You do realize this is probably contributing to Obama’s floundering approval numbers, a lot of people (especially people that don’t pay much attention to politics), are going to be very annoyed that Obama is trying to politicize the NCAA tournament.
