John Vihstadt (R) wins Arlington County Board race. …No, really.

(Via AoSHQ) To quote my favorite Jim Henson line: well, put me in overshoes and call me a duck. “John Vihstadt, a Republican who ran as an independent with the endorsement of the local Republican and Green parties, has won the special election to replace Chris Zimmerman (D) on the Arlington County [Virginia] Board.”  And let’s get the caveats out of the way: special election, special election issues, low (16%) turnout, and yes, having the Green party on-side for this one changed the dynamic of the race (see the 2012 returns for an idea of how this area votes*).  Still. I saw this race a couple of days ago, and I assumed that we weren’t going to squeak past.

In fairness, nobody freaking told me that we had the Greens supporting our candidate, which would have been very helpful information, news media.

But I digress. My point is, it’s hard out there for a Democrat right now, huh?  Everything’s got to go their way if they want to lock in the win.  And the upsets seem to be happening all over the place, these days.

*Entertainingly, all three 2012 candidates – including the Democrat Board member – endorsed Vihstadt.

  1. This is an interesting year Moe, if the Green Party decided to support a Republican, I’m guessing that a lot of people are really angry with Democrats.

I think we may see libertarians also come out in support of Republicans. You see the Obama Administration has caused people to see the left for it’s totalitarian nature and the people want no part of it.

Not saying we’re going to agree with libertarians, but the fact they consider the Democrat Party to be a threat to our liberty isn’t something we should ignore either.

    1. (waves) A libertarian cat here, fully prepared to support *competent* GOPers. (and fully prepared to piss on the gutless D.C. wing of the GOP as needed, full disclosure)

Now, if you expect the Libertarian Party to support the GOP .. that may take a *major* miracle.

      1. I think it’s rather likely due to the IRS scandal and the NSA scandal.

I’m not exactly a libertarian but this administration has seriously breached the trust with the American people.
