The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has reserved $43.5 million in television airtime in dozens of targeted House districts this fall — a signal the party is attempting to play defense and offense in a challenging midterm cycle.

The money is split across 36 districts, including 17 pickup opportunities, according to a DCCC aide. More districts and more money could be added to the reservations as the cycle progresses, the aide said.

…reads like the people who put the list together reads the Cook Political Report religiously. It also reads like the DCCC has pretty much written off CA-36, FL-18, NC-07, and UT-04 at this point and is getting nervous about a bunch of races in its Lean Democratic and Likely Democratic lists. Which I imagine would be disconcerting to any Democrat reading this who is wondering how to reconcile bravura language about the Democrats taking the House back with We need to spend tens of millions of dollars just to keep from losing our 2012 gains*.

Five months to go, people.  And, gotta be honest here: the Democrats aren’t moving the needle the way they want it to go.  Ain’t it just a shame?
