Quote of the Day, Really. Yes. EVERYBODY Is Counting The Days Until 01/20/2017 edition.

The Washington Free Beacon gets it right on the first try:

According to Politico, Obama’s Italian dinner party illustrates the paradox of his second term. “Stymied at home and abroad, Obama recognizes that he is less in control of the Washington agenda than ever in his presidency,” write Budoff Brown and Epstein. “Yet his newfound realism has also given him a palpable sense of liberation.” I find nothing paradoxical about Obama’s recent pattern of behavior, nothing mysterious about the golfing, partying, traveling. It is quite obvious: Obama has given up.

Which is not the worst thing in the world, frankly. We’ve all seen what happened when the man attempted to actually run things…

  1. Completely OT, but I know it’s the kind of thing that some folks (like you, and me) will love:

California’s top-two primary fiasco is supposed to advance two Democrats, or at least a dominant Democrat and a GOP candidate who’s just happy to get that far.

Well, what do you do when two Republicans end up contesting the highest-profile seriously-contested statewide office?

    1. “Unintended consequences”
      .
More seriously, this “two highest” thing was a big mistake for the Dems.
      .
Unless the Cali Dems are *very* different from the Illinois ones, the “nominee” is plainly obvious from the start, the only points to having a “primary” – except in Chicago** – are to ensure that there’s a “second banana” in case the nominee gets caught with a dead girl or live boy, and to raise the profile of a future nominee.
      .
On the GOP side, however, there’s – usually – a frothy debate about ideas and ideals, the primaries turn on, well, on whether ideas trump establishment dollars for one, but also on which ideas are better…
      .
Since supporting good ideas is more motivating than supporting “the obvious nominee”, I’m not surprised that the Cali Dems are coming in dead last in these things ..

** Chicago Dems are .. pretty frothy with ideas .. all of them involve which group(s) to fleece, though ..

There are two things wrong with this:

The two Republicans are in the race because — as JEM noted — this is “the highest-profile seriously-contested statewide office.” The rest of the high-profile offices include an Anointed Democrat, who will win.

The Democrat base IS motivated to support good ideas. It’s just that to the Democrat base, the “good idea” is “Which candidate will give me lots of free stuff?”
