It’s almost over. At long last, the Mississippi Senate GOP primary…

…is almost over.  They just have to count the votes, now.  Yes, I am so ready for this to be over and done with. And I’ll be honest; I kinda feel sorry for Thad Cochran. I know, I know, he chose to be amenable to pressure to run just one more time – but I am often prone to these bouts of sentimentality, and I frankly cherish them. I feel that they keep me from engaging in thought-patterns that are not… optimal, in the long run.

  1. Considering Cochran allowed himself to be the vessel of Barbour and the hard left of Mississippi, I can’t find it in me to feel sympathy with him. If the robocalls calling the TP racist are made directly by his campaign ( or by the NRSC) then I downright despise him ( but I’ll withhold judgement on that front until all of the info is out).

  2. I’m sure Cochran must have some redeeming qualities.
    .
I just have no idea what those might be.

  3. And right now Cochran is winning by 7, so if that trend continues ( mostly on the back of Dem voters convinced that the TP is racist) then any and all sympathy I might’ve had is gone.

    1. I’m stunned and angry. It angers me that Haley Barbour pushed the whole tea parties are racist divide, and that they’d go after D votes like this. If this is the GOP today, than things are much worse than I thought. I feel silly still saying I am republican and attending local r events.

      1. Dave Brat reached out to Democrats. I’m not saying they pushed him over the divide, but did you complain when he did that?

        1. Dave Brat didn’t reach out to Democrats.
Unless you think rightwing populism is the same as “reaching out to Democrats”
or the basic general election statement of ” I don’t care which party you are vote for me” as “reaching out to Democrats”

Brat certainly didn’t spend money on robocalls essentially calling his opponent ( and what conservatives in general basically stand for0 racist/racism.

          1. “‘You had Brat operatives going to Democratic Party committees, even on election eve, asking them to go to the polls to get rid of Eric Cantor,’ [Larry] Sabato said on CNN. ‘It had nothing to do with Dave Brat. There were robocalls to Democrats in that district, telling Democrats come out to the polls.'”
            .
Sabato is a partisan, but not a liar. And I remember people having been furious at Cochran (and others) simply for the sin of soliciting Democratic support, FULL STOP, regardless of the nature of the appeal. I also see many of those same people either ignorant of Brat doing the same thing, or giving him a pass.
            .
I’m not defending Cochran’s actions, and I wish McDaniel had won tonight. And I hope Brat wins. But I also would hope for some consistency in people’s mindsets from time to time.

        2. There’s a difference. In MS they courted Dems with promises that Cochran would bring more pork (spending) to MS. That doesn’t sound like a GOP that has concern over debt. Also comments from Haley Barbour indicated a racial component in Tea Party candidates. I am tired of tea party being wrongly accused of racismz

Did Brat condemn Cantor for not supporting Obamacare. If he did something to that effect, I’d see your point. As it is, I don’t.

          1. I never said there wasn’t a difference. There clearly is, and taking the full situations into account, it’s one that favors Brat. But my point, which I thought I had made clear, was that I have seen some people be hypocrites by condemning Cochran for trying to drum up Democratic support, while either giving Brat a pass for courting Democrats or remaining ignorant that he did.
            .
Look, either there are some circumstances where it’s okay to ask for Democratic votes in a Republican primary, or there are no such circumstances. If you hold the first position, then you can legitimately claim that there is a difference between what Brat did and what Cochran did, such that Brat’s conduct isn’t a problem and Cochran’s is. (That’s my position, for what it’s worth.) But if you hold the second position, then both Cochran and Brat are in the wrong — and even if Cochran is more wrong, that wouldn’t excuse Brat. Some people don’t agree with that last sentence, and those are the people I’m attacking.
            .
(For the record, I think “Vote for me and help me beat a representative who’s no longer doing his job” is a perfectly acceptable message no matter who it’s directed to…and I think “Vote for me because my opponent’s supporters are totally racist, you guys, seriously” is well beyond the pale. Based on what you said — “It’s not the voters you get, it’s how you get those voters” — I trust that we are in basic agreement that Brat is fine and Cochran is not.)

    1. I guess it’s nice that the Democratic Party and the Republican Party can still unite against a common enemy.
But their enemy selection process is extremely flawed.
      .
Oh, I’ll keep my affiliation so I can vote in the primaries.
But I’m done reliably voting for the lesser evil.

  4. Does Thad Cochran really believe that all those black Democrats who voted for him in the primary will vote for him again in the general election?

    1. Why would he care? He doesn’t need them in the general. As awful and dirty as this campaign was, he’ll most likely easily get re-elected. There just aren’t enough Dems in MS for it to matter even if a significant number primary voters stay home in the general.

    2. No he doesn’t. They will all reliably vote D in November and Cochran will be complaining about Tea party disloyalty and demanding McDaniel endorse him.
