To every thing – turn, turn, turn – there is an [Election] season – turn, turn, turn…

This is why October in an election year is always so much fun

Voters have turned decidedly hostile toward President Obama and his policies. That’s not just my partisan view; it is empirical data. A poll released over the weekend shows that 32 percent of voters are using their midterm election votes to send a message of opposition to the president. That is “the highest ‘no vote’ percentage in the last 16 years” as measured by Gallup. I have never seen a White House or a political party as hollowed out as the Democrats appear to be now.  The Obama presidency isn’t officially over yet, but it is receding further into our rearview mirror.  And it is becoming clear that many in the Democratic Party think the Obama presidency is effectively over, and they are acting accordingly.

…assuming that you have a twisted and sad definition of ‘fun,’ which is not so much an accusation on my part as it is a confession. Because the nerve-wracking part of all of this is that you have to still sit around and wait to see when this disdain shows up in individual campaign polls.  All the while being uncomfortably aware that there’s law of physics that says that it has to.

So now you know why Election Season and Halloween are at the same place on the calender: it’s just more thematically appropriate that way, apparently.

  1. It’s a much more fun year than, say, 2006. Same principles at play, of course, and there’s no such thing as a permanent majority, so savoring while it lasts.

  2. Time to vent: Why did the NRSC pull out of MI? Every election the GOP seems determined to flirt with MI in the summer but as soon as the leaves change, they bail. A decent ground game and some money they can flip this state, it’s full of disaffected blue collar workers out of work. Land isn’t a bad candidate, Peters isn’t a great one, a little help and the polls might look better. The ad campaign against Land and Snyder has been brutal this season.

Thanks Moe for having a forum for me to vent

    1. Land got defined early and didn’t have the money or skills to fight back. MI is a blue state so it was always going to be a heavy lift. Shame though, she looked strong at the start. I’ve heard that even though Right to Work passed, base Republicans are demoralized by Snyder’s expansion of Medicaid and other actions.

    2. The NRSC also lagged in fundraising and are running low. Cue the “If only they hadn’t spent a good chunk of primary season poking the base in the eye” comments.
