“The Man in the High Castle” has been greenlit by Amazon.

Cool. Now, don’t let it suck.

What if the Nazis had won? That’s the chilling premise of “The Man in the High Castle”, based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, which became Amazon’s most-watched pilot ever and will now be expanded into a full series to be shown online.

The one-off trial episode of “The Man in the High Castle” was produced and shown as part of Amazon’s Pilot Season programme. A couple of times a year Amazon releases a batch of pilot episodes for potential new shows, and you vote for which one you want to see as a full series. The shows appear on Amazon Instant Video.

    1. The pilot? I liked it. The farther along it got the more it became clear that the people doing the show liked the book and took it seriously, which was largely my biggest worry. I can live with them changing stuff around if that’s what’s needed to make it a believable show.

      1. I haven’t read the book yet, and it’s only like 3 bucks on the Kindle. Is it a good read?

That was clear to me, too … thank goodness. All of the changes (so far) have made sense in terms of telling a story for television.

A few years ago I read a book of essays by various authors about writing SF, and one of the chapters was by Harlan Ellison. He told the story of meeting the young producer who at that time held the option on Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land. As the conversation progressed and the producer waxed enthusiastic about “improving” the story, Ellison grokked a wrongness. “Have you actually read the novel?!” he asked in exasperation. “Well, no … but my girlfriend has, and she has some really cool ideas!” Ellison had to leave the room to avoid committing homicide.
