I find this “Mr. Holmes” trailer problematical.

It appears to take the wrong sort of liberties with the character.

Sherlock Holmes can have any number of different ‘looks’ – but he’s an iconic character, not a dramatic one. Messing with the fundamentals of Holmes (which this movie seems prepared to do) will probably cause it to fail.  I say this without heat; that’s just the way it is.

Mind you, movies like this are more my speed.

  1. The concept seemed familiar and a quick Google showed why, based on the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind

  2. I enjoy the modern retellings, but the screens are littered with unlikable, sociopathic savants. Holmes can stand to be humanized again, and if just anyone can’t pull that off, McKellen certainly can.

    1. Reading the source material he generally was an unlikable sociopathic savant. Or at least he couldn’t be bothered with social niceties unless it was necessary to attain his goal. Which much of the time was the same thing.

  3. I will also watch the 2nd trailer. Looks funny, and Titus Pullo being the badguy is also a reason to go watch it.

  4. Same here, especially if the Finnish kid gets to do some Simo Hayha stuff, or even if they just let him get stabby. Oh, wait, you meant the Holmes movie. Never mind.
