Team Clinton’s populist store: champagne and Old Fashioneds! – No beer, though.

This is pretty much Hillary Clinton’s actual target demographic in a nutshell: champagne flutes*, cocktail napkins, Old Fashioned** – ZOMG, OLD. FASHIONED. – glasses.  Because that just screams “middle class drinking patterns” to me.  Not to mention “Hey, we’re down with the youngsters!”

no-beer

And not a beer mug to be found.  Which doesn’t really surprise me – Hillary Clinton would be as about as populist as my parakeet, if I had a parakeet – but they should have at least pretended, you know what I mean? I mean, sure, it’s not like anybody really believes that Hillary Clinton can connect with the middle and working classes, but we’re all obliged to pretend, for a time. It would help if Hillary Clinton hadn’t set up her online store apparently by using a dozen John Kerry clones as her primary focus panel…

PS: I will give this one to Team Clinton for free: stop selling “Bill – First Laddie 2016” buttons forthwith.  “Lad,” in British popular culture, means something that, if applied to Bill Clinton, would be simultaneously highly insulting and hysterically accurate. Pointing that out might not work, but the VRWC is always going to be willing to give it the old college try.

*Confirming that the proper term was ‘flutes,’ and that these glasses qualified as same, was in retrospect one of the more marginal bits of research that I’ve done. But I’m a giver that way.

**To be exceptionally clear on this: the young people most likely to drink Old Fashioneds are the young people who will hear the phrase ‘craft cocktail bar‘ and then think, Yes, but it is also artisanal?  – And thus it does not shock me at all that Team Clinton made up these drink glasses, because those are probably the kind of young people most likely to interact directly with Team Clinton.

  1. In my (admittedly pretty proletariat) experience, people who drink beer almost always do so out of the container it shipped in.

    .

(The two exceptions I can think of are when drinking in a bar, or when said container was a keg)

  2. I like an Old-Fashioned or a Sazerac, now and then.

These moments when I discover that I am, through sheer happenstance, in synch with the pop-cultural zeitgeist are always unsettling.

(I can’t see any scenario that results in me voting for a Clinton, though.)

  3. I was almost convinced the whole thing was satire, but it’s part of the actual Ready for Hillary website. In addition to the generic Tshirts and baby onesies, there’s cufflinks? And apparently something about that awful picture of her in huge sunglasses poles well, because that’s the only one you can buy of her.
