So I see that there’s a film called ‘Tulip Fever,’ and I get annoyed.

Why?  Because I knew that there was not a chance at all that it’s going to be about the 17th Century Dutch tulip craze, which was roughly equivalent to the 1980s Wall Street ‘thing’ in terms of insane business transactions and ostentatious excess. Nah. Can’t have that at all, can we? Putting a movie in that historical era might be interesting.

:pause:

Well, put me in overshoes and call me a duck.

I might see this.  Because they went nuts over tulips. Certifiably nuts.

  1. I was expecting a story about the tulip craze, with a basic theme of “See, Capitalism is crazy!” Instead, it looks like “Young woman, trapped in a marriage with an older man she doesn’t love [due to the patriarchy, of course] considers whether to run off with the handsome painter.”

Oh well, at least it’s a little different. And not another remake.

  2. Honestly, based on the trailer, it doesn’t look to be much about the Dutch tulip craze to me. It looks like it’s typical Oscar bait: costume drama + sex + old white guy is the villain, possibly also the Church. I’m sure Hollywood will love it.

    1. True, but my hope there is that the scriptwriter(s) may have been exposed enough to the insanity that was the time period to go “Hey! We should put some of this stuff in the film!” At this point, I’ll take what I can get. 🙂

    2. This is Tom Stppard writing, so you may be assured that there’s more to it than that. Also: Trailers Always Lie.

  3. Holy crap, Moe. I saw this trailer and had the exact opposite reaction you did. There is nothing about that trailer that screams: This is about the 17th Century Dutch tulip craze!
