Well, Captain America: Civil War was certainly an embarrassment.

I don’t know who gets to be humiliated more: Zac Snyder, who will be having his slightly turgid, but not actually bad DC film unfavorably compared to CA:CW until the end of time… or whoever it was that they tapped to do all those Spider-Man films which nobody’s gonna remember now because OH MY GOD THIS SPIDER-MAN WAS PERFECT.  They’re gonna be making a Spider-Man movie now, you know.  That is, Marvel will be making it, and we’re all gonna see it, and it’s gonna be awesome*.

Seriously, Captain America: Civil War was a great popcorn flick.  A lot of nice interactions between the cast. As well as being a flick that didn’t actually shy away from consequences. Make space on your calendar.

*I wanna see a Black Panther film now, too. I didn’t think that I would, but I do.  Mind you, Marvel is really good at finding movies that I didn’t think that I wanted to see, but ended up enjoying anyway.

  1. I was completely misled by the post title and was expecting a completely negative review. Maybe I’ll go see it after all.

    1. Oh, do. This movie builds on damn near everything that has gone before in the MCU. And it is amazing.

  2. Marvel seems to have a four-step strategy for storytelling — maybe the best strategy in the business right now. Step 1: decide on ONE BIG THING that each of their characters can be about…Iron Man’s genius, Captain America’s patriotism, etc. Step 2: craft a story that shows off that ONE BIG thing in a way the audience will find relatable. Step 3: cast an actor who can embody the character. Step 4: don’t skimp on special effects, battles, and fan moments. Oh, and Step 5: cash the resulting gigantic box office checks.

Civil War is the new zenith of that very simple strategy. Seriously, this is, what, their thirteenth film? And for my money, they’ve only had one failure (Iron Man 2) and two underwhelming efforts (The Incredible Hulk, Thor 2). Everything else has been better-than-average at worst, and damn near perfect at best. And this film, where they’re now finally forcing all these characters together and letting everything happen…it ranks only below Avengers, in my opinion.

As for Black Panther, yeah, I’m with you. Didn’t think I wanted one, but now I know I do. And I can’t wait for Doctor Strange. Who knows what they’ll do with Ms. Marvel (excuse me, Captain Marvel now)?

    1. Chadwick Boseman was what convinced me. You need the right actor for that part, and whoever does Marvel’s casting has an impressive eye for matching talent to roles.

      1. And Tom Holland? Oh, man, you already said it above, but I have to say it my own way too.
        .
Tobey Maguire was a pretty good Peter Parker, but only an okay Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield was a near-perfect Spider-Man, but a not-at-all-good Peter Parker. Tom Holland has ALREADY PROVEN he can excel at both.

    2. I like Iron Man 2.

And I thought the first avengers was overrated. Too Joss-y.

      1. I actually like what they did with the Incredible Hulk origin story: they put it in the damn opening credits. Because, yes, we all know what freaking happened to Bruce Banner.
