So, good pencils for somebody who is beginning to draw?

Somewhat to my surprise, I found myself drawing eyes again today. I think that there’s a little bit of improvement there, except of course that the dang things are still too angular. But that’s why they call it practice.

Anyway… I’m using a #2 Bic mechanical pencil for this, and that’s probably… wrong? I know I’m probably holding the pencil wrong, too. Or at least I’m holding the pencil in only one of the correct ways.

  1. Always favored number 3 pencils for outlining and writing. Number 2’s for shading and shadows. And yes eyes have shadowing.

  2. Oh and use wooden pencils, mechanical one are good for writing and math but not art.

  3. I have always been of the opinion that the correct tools and techniques are the ones that achieve the desired results… but I’m a carpenter who occasionally draws and/or paints, not an artist. 😀 And process has it’s place: it’s a tool in your kit, though, not the final product. I think mechanical pencils are great for ‘hard’ lines, not so much for more subtle work. Depends on the effect you want and with what you are comfortable.

  4. Could you maybe make pairs of eyes? It is somehow disturbing to have a page of mostly single eyes displayed. Lovecraftian perhaps?

    1. Just wait until I start drawing more female eyes. I think that the book wants me to draw eyes until I’m ready to draw noses.
