Dwayne Johnson to play Doc Savage.

OK, I can see this. The important thing here, I think, is that Dwayne Johnson WANTS to play Doc Savage; based on conversations I’ve had with my wife* Savage is a role that you can’t just play casually.  You need to be able to go all out. I’m pretty sure Johnson can do that, and genuine enthusiasm can make up for a lot. Guess we’ll see, huh? …Eventually: it’s probably not coming out before 2018.

*She’s read the books, I haven’t. They’re on the pile, but… well. So is a lot of other stuff. Heaven for me is likely going to involve a well-stocked set of bookshelves, a TV, and a comfy chair…

  1. Doc Savage is also known as Man of Bronze. So that aspect is covered. He is a man raised by his parent on Science, deliberately. Up until now the only recent cinematic representation of Doc Savage has been Buckaroo Bonzai. If they do this correctly, this should be awesome.

    1. The only thing I have against casting the Rock as Doc Savage is it means he won’t be Owen Z for sure. But as much as a certain segment will cry SJW casting, this makes perfect sense to me.

  2. According to Facebook, so it must be true, Johnson was in talks to possibly be Owen in an MHI movie or series, but it fell through. Oh well, this is a decent replacement I guess.

    1. Johnson’s the right scale to play Z .. not sure they can make him young enough for the underground fight club, though…

    2. My understanding was that there was a *lot* of IP issues work through (pay for), and the numbers just couldn’t add up.

My guess is it has to do with the Universal Monster movies. Since they want to bring those back as a “universe”, my guess is Universal didn’t want to sell.

      1. I’m reasonably sure every one of the “Universal Monsters” has prior art ..

..but I can understand not wanting to go contentious in an IP fight. Easier to come to an agreement.

  3. Dwayne Johnson tends to be in movies that I enjoy. Even the ones I think I’m positive I won’t like I end up enjoying. I have yet to see one of his movies that I didn’t enjoy to some extent, and that is all I ask for in a movie– an hour and a half+ of enjoyment.

  4. I have not read the books in a while…but I think he could do it…requires a certain bit of campiness, which he can pull off.
