The HBO ‘Westworld’ Teaser Trailer.

It… does not look entirely bad.

I only dimly remember the original, which was of course a seminal flick in 1970s dystopian cinema. I think that this may be one time where you can get away with a remake because the premise (robots gone amok in a roleplaying pleasure resort) responds well to improvements in the state of the art.  Besides, it was forty years ago. At some point you have to accept that the well can refresh itself.

  1. I am sure the special effects will be better…but it is hard to top Yul Brynner as the main character…

    1. Agreed, but I think Ed Harris will give it a shot. Other members of the cast may be equally awesome!

  2. It looks good, but…
I don’t trust HBO. I fully expect they’ll find some way to make this a political attack on Western Civ.

  3. I’ve never seen the original, but i saw the sequel about a dozen times. This looks cool.

    1. See the original. It’s good. And horrific.

I should clarify that it’s not a horror movie. The themes and some of the scenes are unsettling, though. They’ll stick with you, especially because they’re done with subtly, rather than going for a cheap jump scare or gross out.

For instance, at one point the protagonist crosses over to the medieval themed portion of the park, and enters a torture chamber. None of the cheap, gratuitous things that would be practically required in a modern movie happen. The scene is extraordinary effective. It’ll haunt you. Without blood, and without deliberate cruelty.

  4. I saw this when it came out in the theaters. I so very much hope they do a good job with it.
