Game writers to be eligible for SFWA membership.

I don’t currently qualify: I have a couple of professional sales and some writing credits, but nothing really all that current. Still, excellent news out of the SFWA:

Writers who help create narratives for video games, table-top roleplaying games and card games will be eligible to be admitted to the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) following a membership-wide vote. SFWA will start accepting applications for this Active-level type of membership on August 1st, 2016.

“I’m proud to be leading an organization acknowledging the wide range of forms genre writing can take,” said SFWA President Cat Rambo. “I’m also looking forward to the expertise and experience such writers can bring to the organization. “

Time to kick it up a notch.

  1. I hear SFWA isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sarah Hoyt found them to be less than helpful when she was a member.

This sounds like they’re losing members (after many years of stiffing a lot of writers, especially indie) and want to pump up the numbers, and dues income.

On the Gripping Hand, they could be getting their act together after years of problems.

      1. That would be…refreshing. And no small vindication for the Sad Puppies if true.

      2. Declare openness after a successful purge, but make admission dependant on a vote of all the current membership.

Sure sounds like a unilateral ceasefire to me.

  2. It’s about time. Some of these games have such an immersive world that calling it storytelling is an understatement.
