Quote of the Day, This Is Both A Brutal And A Complimentary Take On David Spade edition.

The ONion AV Club:

Like fellow Saturday Night Live alum Jay Mohr, [David] Spade has a supremely limited range, but within those narrow restrictions, he can be unbelievably awesome.

This is… fair.  I liked him in PCU, thought he was well-cast in Coneheads, and of course David Spade is a major reason why The Emperor’s New Groove is almost everybody’s second-favorite Disney flick*.  It may not be what the man was looking for out of his career, but they’re going to be showing TENG for the rest of my life, so that’s nothing to sneeze at.

*In some ways, that’s better than being a plurality’s favorite Disney flick.

  1. “Just Shoot Me” made excellent use of Spade’s genius.
“Joe Dirt” .. is an acquired taste.

Personal opinion, the best of Spade’s filmography are where he’s paired with comedians with very different styles .. “Tommy Boy” is excellent *because* Spade and Farley are so *different* in how they chew up scenes…

And yeah, “Emperor’s New Groove” is quite good.

    1. Apparently they made a Joe Dirt 2 last year. Must’ve been direct-to-video.

I always liked him in Rules of Engagement for similar reasons to Just Shoot Me.

    2. Anyone think there was something lost when we went away from the comedic pairing of the “Straight” man (and that is charged these days, but Bud Abbott, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby) paired with the wacky sidekick (who riffed off the straight man, like Lou Costello, Jerry Lewis, and Bob Hope/Danny Kaye?)

Yes, it has been said more than once that I was probably born 50 years late.

      1. So many projects like that are ego-vehicles, most comedians don’t go for the team-model anymore.
