Oh, gee. The “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” teaser trailer.

Well, perhaps it will not suck. I absolutely, positively make no argument that it will not suck, mind you. The second and third movies sent this franchise into a dive that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides could not quite pull it out of.  But you never know.  The Mouse’s dice have been hot and hopping, lately. Maybe they can work some magic on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Maybe.

  1. 1. Watched trailer.
    2. Said aloud “Man, Johnny Depp must REALLY need money these days.”
    3. Wife responded “Duh. Giant divorce. Not going well for him.”
    4. …Oh. Oh, right.

    1. Nor did I, though I grew gradually more dispirited with the scripting. Especially when it became apparent that they had 90 minutes worth of story packed into five hours. Perhaps influenced by that, I actively disliked “On Stranger Tides”, despite it featuring two of my favorite actors.
      .
On a larger note, this is an example of what can happen to franchises when the studio realizes that it has become a license to print money. By way of opposite example, look at “Deadpool”. They got $7m slashed from their budget just before production started. They cut a couple of extraneous characters, tightened their script and lost a bunch of CGI that wasn’t needed for the story. The result was a dynamite movie. I hope that the lesson wasn’t lost on them.

  2. As someone who has voyaged on a large sailing vessel, the most unbelievable part is those ships navigating the rocks in the opening scene. Just…no.
