So I’m pontificating on something to my wife…

…I don’t even remember what it was about. Something to do with Internet policy.  Anyway, I wanted to backtrack, and then we had this exchange:

  • Me: I don’t even remember now where I’m going with this.
  • My wife: [hopeful voice] Pollo Campero?

So! Takeout fried chicken for dinner it was, then!  Just as well, really: they turned off the water in the neighborhood this afternoon without telling us first – some kind of construction, not an emergency break or anything – and your cooking options become remarkably restricted when you suddenly don’t have a reliable source of clean water. Plus, Pollo Campero makes really good fried chicken. I don’t miss the local KFC at all.

  1. We always knew she was the smart one in this relationship. Doesn’t mean we don’t love you both, but…

  2. Y’know, if you keep a gallon jug of water in the back of the freezer, you don’t have this problem ..

You also have less of a problem with food spoiling due to unexpected power outages.

    1. Spare jugs of water are standard procedure here in the frozen North. Food spoilage is less of a concern in that case though though: just chuck everything onto the back porch.

      1. That works in January, but not in July. (flip that for Australian Moe-followers..)

Also, just ran across a clever idea .. freeze a small jar of water and, once it’s solid, put a quarter on top of the ice, and stick it in the back of the freezer.
        .
If you are away for an extended period, check the jar – if the quarter is still on top, everything’s fine, but if the quarter is in the middle or at the bottom, then the freezer was without power for long enough that you should toss everything and start over.
