I hope that Fidel Castro made a good confession.

It would be a very, very good idea for Raul Castro – who is himself 85 – does the same thing. Immediately. Before it is officially too late, for all Eternity.

PS: Actually, the above attempts to be the most pitiless thing that you read about Fidel Castro’s death today.

  1. You didn’t succeed…but that’s only because I read an ESPN article about how great Castro was for sports in Cuba. This is where I would say something snarky about bread and circuses, only this was Communist Cuba — so how much bread was there, really?

Well, I could say good things about Stalin and cinema too, I suppose.

      1. My point was that one article would be as appropriate as the other — which is to say, not at all. Despite the great successes of the Cuban national baseball program, you don’t see aspiring stars fleeing TO Cuba.

  2. They’d have to truly believe, in their heart of hearts, that everything they did was wrong. Which I seriously doubt. “I thought all for the best” ain’t gonna cut it.

    1. You go where people need you most. A Pope visiting a declared atheist country is…uncomfortable…for the regime, and heartening for the dissident population.

      1. I’m sorry, I wasn’t being clear.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t but that there were plenty of opportunities for Castro to change…

In other words, how many people have the privilege of meeting personally one on one with three popes?

How would one answer the question at the end of all things?

  3. There is a dark little part of me that hopes that Fidel saw his life slip away and had a moment of clarity about what a monster he had been. And that he had reached out to God with the prayers that his victims undoubtedly said in their final moments. And as the reaper claimed him, the last thing he heard was “Your prayer is very important to us. Please stay on the line and the next available agent will be with you shortly.”

    1. I approve.

While I’m not going to bring up Trump much here, but his statement on the matter was pretty near pitch perfect.
(As opposed to all the various leaders who happily gave a tongue bath to a dead monster.)
