I’m bored. Somebody recommend me a video game.

And I can’t quite justify Civilization VI right now, so not that one. Besides, I don’t need a time suck of that magnitude. Just something to fiddle with when I don’t feel like playing with my Fallout 4 dollhouses.

  1. Have you tried FTL (Faster than Light)? It’s a rouge-like spaceship sim with a lot of nice little touches. Quick to learn; sucks you in if you let it.

  2. Yeah FTL is a good one. Also, Defense Grid 1/2 (sci-fi tower defense). Most other games I’d recommend are time sucks 🙂

  3. What genre? That matters a lot.
    .
I wrote a lot of recommendations, but I’ll make it simpler instead. Go over to Humble Bundle right now and get the Game on bundle. For $10, you’ll get 80 Days, a Phineas Fogg adventure game, Her Story, an engaging FMV game where you deduced what happened in a criminal case using video and documentary clues, Grim Fandango, which I don’t need to explain, Stanley Parable, which was a very unique adventure game, Day of the Tentacle (again, I don’t need to explain) and Borderlands the Pre-Sequel (a FPS/ loot game which was the worst in the series but still worth $10).
    .
Or hey, there’s the Shadowrun games. Go run some shadows chummer. Frankly there’s a lot of $6 games on GOG that you could sink hours and hours into.

  4. Kerbal Space Program. Building rockets LEGO-style, putting them in orbit (or not), etc. Very large modding community with everything from silly parts to sci-fi ships to real-world. I have several mods for the game.

  5. Hey Moe! You should check out Oxygen Not Included. It’s a space colony sim that attempts to simulate every possible little thing ala Dwarf Fortress.
In a nutshell you have duplicants (aka “dupes”) that are 3D printed in the heart of an asteroid. You have to make the inside of the asteroid habitable by providing food, water, air, etc. for your dupes.
The catch is achieving these goals in the face of all the limitations. For example Dupe breathe, and their respiration consumes Oxygen and produces CO2. And since the asteroid is air-tight, you have to find some way of producing oxygen and dealing with the resulting CO2. It’s definitely a “Losing is Fun” type of game.
The game is in early access on Steam, so check it out!

  6. Sunless Sea. The setting: 1890 London, only 30 years ago, it was sucked underground on the shores of a vast undersea cave. You’re a captain trying to make it in the horror-filled darkness.

  7. I like FTL, although the controls could be better. I’ve played Defense Grid 1, not a bad game, but I didn’t really care for it, and I’m not sure why. If you’re looking for games you can play in small chunks tower defense is probably a good choice, although I like the Gemcraft series better.

Ever play Path of Exile? Truly Free to play, scratches the same itch for me that Diablo 2 did. Although that can turn into a huge time sink.

  8. For the computer, or console?
    .
I haven’t played games on my computer for years, so I can’t help you there.
    .
I forget if you’ve still got a 360 or have a XBOne. There are a lot of good games for both. (And some that aren’t so good, but the ambitious failures are sometimes more interesting.)

  9. Having wandered in here a day or two late, I’ll toss my two cents in and suggest Offworld Trading Company.
