Who in God’s name keeps buying Starship Troopers videos?

Because they keep making them.  Am I missing something, here?  Seriously, I’m starting to wonder if there’s something wrong with me.  Or that maybe I’m getting old.

PS: What? Will I watch Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars?  Don’t be absurd.  The tactical behavior of the Bugs started off stupid in the First Abomination, and apparently never got any better. The real Johnnie Rico — well, you know what I mean — would have erased these CGI-happy herds of stampeding praying mantises halfway through the first movie and then gone out for pineapple squash.

Yeah.  I’m one of those Heinlein fans.  I didn’t even have to look it up.  And here: have a taste of the true quill.

      1. Spoken like Black Jack Geary himself.

If you don’t get the reference, you’re missing out.

        1. I’ve read all of Hemry’s work and I approve this message.
Also, I think he’s a fellow resident of MD, Moe.

  1. (Deep breath) I’m one of those people.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I cut my teeth on Niven and Pournelle. I know the problems of the first film and don’t regard it as “a great work of satire” either. It’s gotta work as a whale first, Verhoven. I walked out of that profoundly disappointed and thinking, “Well, at least The Postman can’t be that bad when it comes out later this year.” Whoops. (The Rifftrax is good though.) And the second film? It’s worse. It lacks the few good points of the first film and tosses it on top of an even more generic and worse written sci-fi story. And I’m a mistie. I have a high tolerance for bad films. This is not an enjoyable bad film.

But the thing is? Everything since then hasn’t sucked. The Roughnecks animated series? It hewed a lot closer to the book and, back in the day, had a lot of fans saying “why wasn’t *this* the movie?” The CGI Invasion film? It had issues, but it was a better film than the original. And the guy who made Appleseed has a better handle on sci-fi action than Verhoven did. Who knew? (Also, much more Aliens, much less bad tactics from a WWII era film only payed half attention to.)

And Troopers 3? Against all odds, it was a good film. Yes, it still has the Starship Troopers name on it, but a) It’s actually pretty well written b) If you treat it as “Bob’s Outer Space Adventure 3: Marauders” rather than something based on a Heinlen novel, it would actually have a pretty good rep and c) It adds back in certain major missing elements from the Heinlein novel back into the movie. Seriously, I was rather pleasantly surprised by the quality level of the film.

So, yeah. I’ll watch this one. Again, this is from the CGI branch of the series and it’s a different beast than the live action.
