Potential John Wick universe spinoff movie announced: Ballerina (female lead).

I’ll allow it.

Lionsgate has won a bidding war to pick up a female-centric spec action script titled Ballerina that will serve as a platform for a possible John Wick spinoff.

Basil Iwanyk, whose Thunder Road banner is behind the hit Wick action franchise starring Keanu Reeves, will produce Ballerina.

(H/T: MovieWeb) Basically, assassin on quest to assassinate other assassins who assassinated the first assassin’s family. I don’t know if the assassin’s family were themselves assassins, but a man can hope.  Besides, really, this is about the gun-fu to be found in a ballet of bullet-shaped death.  And the Continental Hotel.  They gotta have some of that.

Comparisons with ‘Kill Bill’ incoming in 5… 4… 3…

I don’t know that John Wick needed a sequel, so I’m pretty sure that it doesn’t need a spinoff. But that’s okay. I don’t have to watch everything that comes out.

I’m pretty much sure John Wick Chapter 3 is in the works, or John Wick vs. The World.

      • RangerSG says:

It is. And it will be set immediately after the events of Part 2, and is meant to provide a clear conclusion to John’s story.

    I’ve no problem with this.

Unlike any number of franchises that have felt the need to gender shift the main character(s), or have the main character turned into a supporting character entralled by the new Mary Sue.

I’ll hold back judgement from Dr. Who until I see the storylines. If the gender change makes sense, then more power to them. If not, they may have killed a franchise, kinda like the whole Thor is a girl, or Cap is a Hydra agent Nazi or some sort.

Or the 14th Doctor is announced this time next year.

      • Luke says:

If the storyline made sense, you’d already know it. You’re asking for a rationalization.

Kind of like the people who played the Destiny 2 Beta, found that the relevant adjectives were slow, weak, and stupid, and then pre-ordered anyway.

The Community episode “Conventions of Space and Time” comes to mind. Maybe this will be Dr. Who’s Minerva moment, or maybe they’ll actually make it work.

I’m on the fence myself. I see no reason why the Doctor can’t be a woman. But I also see no reason to mess with the basic elements of a premise that has proven to be one of the most sustainable in all science fiction.

  • Finrod says:

Alas, I doubt they’ll use the Styx song Ballerina.
