The ‘Return of the Jedi’ Honest Trailer.

I want to push back on this Honest Trailer a bit.

I will happily concede that Return of the Jedi is the weakest of the three movies under consideration, here.  And that the Ewoks are precisely the cynical marketing ploy that they’re presented here as.  But the fight at Jabba’s Barge? That was good. I enjoyed it. It was very… player-character-y.

They should burn every copy of every ‘improved’ version of that movie, of course.  Indeed, that almost goes without saying.

Was Return of the Jedi perfect? No.
Weakest of volumes 4 thru 6? Agreed.
But was I entertained? Yes, IMO RotJ was head and shoulders above all the Star Wars films since.

And that fight at Jabba’s Barge? vintage Sword & Planet stuff, Leigh Brackett would approve.

My main issue with Return of the Jedi, was the implication that Darth Vader was redeemed.
I guess it’s nice that Ben doesn’t bear a grudge towards his murderer. But…

The ewoks, meh. Not a fan, but I appreciated the dichotomy that they were violent, cannibalistic teddy bears.

Isn’t Vader’s redemption the whole plot? The only reason Luke didn’t get blasted from the sky is Vader went all Paternal.

I once saw a DVD of RotJ where (in special commentary) Lucas said it was a deliberate theme to have the primitive Ewoks rise up to (help) defeat the technologically advanced empire.

He didn’t say anything about the irony of having them worship a robot, though.
