So they’re going to be rebooting She-Ra on Netflix.

Because we’re at that point in the Circle of Life.

Netflix is set to re-imagine the 80s classic cartoon, She-Ra and unleash a brand new series in 2018. She-Ra is a fictional character in the Filmation cartoon She-Ra: Princess of Power, debuting in 1985. A series of toys under her name were produced by Mattel. She is the alter ego of Princess Adora and the twin sister of Prince Adam/He-Man. She-Ra was intended to appeal to young girls in the same way that He-Man and the Masters of the Universe appealed to young boys.

The phrase ‘warrior princess’ was used in a non-ironic fashion in that article, and this is the world where Wonder Woman brought in 821 million worldwide, so expect less — OK, I confess that I never watched the show. [click click click] Huh. She-Ra was fighting a guerrilla war campaign on a conquered planet. OK, that sounds workable.  Not that it’s aimed at me, anyway.

PS: Please bear in mind that this was a beloved childhood show of Mrs. Lane. Which means that, like any sensible and venerable paterfamilias of the Patriarchy, I’m walking very, very soft. Some doors you just don’t open, you know what I mean?

  1. The classic bad guy in Masters of the Universe is, of course, Skeletor. But after the setting and toy line had been around for a few years, the people running the toy line decided to shake things up a bit by bringing out a second evil faction, The Evil Horde. (Very) shortly afterwards, She-Ra was introduced, along with the usual roll-out of new supporting characters. IIRC, whereas both He-Man and Skeletor had a complete line-up of male allies and one token female ally, She-Ra had a line-up of female allies with a token male ally.

At about this time, Masters of the Universe got its own feature-length animated movie that showed in theaters. And it introduced He-Man’s twin sister, She-Ra. She-Ra also got her own TV series. And as you noted, she was fighting a guerilla war on a different world. But instead of using the female villains from her toy line, they used The Evil Horde as the primary series villains, and folded the female villains from the Princess of Power toy line into the Horde for the TV series.

  2. She-Ra .. I want to say my younger sister watched that .. I remember He-Man being mind-numbingly stupid, although I understand She-Ra was actually .. better.

p.s. I also understand Skeletor has managed to keep getting work (https://www.ispot.tv/ad/7_4y/honda-happy-honda-days-sales-event-skeletor-magic-eight-ball) unlike He-Man .. which means either Skeletor, like Nicholas Cage, *really needs the money* .. or He-Man is now washed up and living in a seedy apartment in Venice Beach.

    1. He also took over Honda’s Twitter feed for a day a few years back – I’m guessing around the same time that commercial ran.

Rioting is too much work. I will, however, consider acting more surly than usual if you think it’ll help.
