  1. At my current job I have not one but two coworkers with the first name of Rohan. It causes me cognitive dissonance.

  2. I actually watched the entire trilogy a couple weeks ago (I got a new TV.) I came away with pretty much the same impression as always. The first two movies are fantastic, superb, every superlative you care to throw. The third… is kind of a mess. Drawn out. They screw up the Battle of the Pelennor Fields (It’s a ‘surprise’ cavalry charge!)

Btw, the second half of the Tick is out…

    1. I can understand how people might feel about the third movie, but Theoden’s Charge is one of my favorites and I watch it a couple of times a year on YT.

  3. The riders of Rohan works, in part, because they’re mostly average farm-workers .. but they know right and they know wrong, and they know you come to the aid of your friends, even if they’re a little different.

There’s a scene, somewhere, where Strider makes that point a second time .. those who cannot stomach assaulting Mordor may go and tackle a .. lesser but still noble and still needful task.

.. and that’s rather Tolkein’s point, that all can do something to advance good; not all need to be Strider or Frodo, some can be Sam, some can be .. the ones who couldn’t handle assaulting Mordor but can handle freeing .. that other place I can’t currently recall.

He was, after all, writing a ‘new mythology’ for England for the modern (post-WWII) age .. and I think he did a pretty good job of it.
