RIP, Rusty Staub.

Ah, dammit. And on Opening Day, too.  I remember Rusty Staub as an announcer, not as a player: my dad was a Mets fan, so I’m a Mets fan, too*.  We’d watch the games.  Well, at least Dad has somebody to shake his head at with while he’s watching the new season, now.

My prayers for his family and loved ones.

*Yes, it’s irreversible. No, there’s nothing that can be done.  I know, you feel my pain.  But, you know: you just get used to it, you know what I mean? You just get used to it.

  1. I just found out that the colors of the Mets are the colors of the teams that left NY for other cities. Dodger Blue and Giant orange.

  2. At least the Mets have won the World Series in their history.

I’m a fan of Purdue, and their men’s basketball team has never won the NCAA tournament. They came in second in 1969 and last made the final four in 1980– even though they’ve won more Big Ten titles than any other school. This year, their 7’2″ senior center was lost to a fractured elbow their first game of the tournament– just another instance of their tournament curse.

  3. Oh and when did Opening Day get moved up from first Monday in April? I still think it’s terrible that they don’t let the Cincinnati Reds open the season any more like they used to. Opening Day was practically a holiday there, the kids got the day off school, and there were parades. Dunno if they still do that or not.
