Jackwagon shuts down Planet Fitness with smartass WiFi network name.

I fully grant that this is legal, and that no charges should be brought.  I also feel that the guy who did this should be smacked in the face with a halibut: “A Michigan gym patron looking for a WiFi connection found one named “remote detonator,” prompting an evacuation and precautionary search of the facility by a bomb-sniffing dog.” As I get older, I find myself sympathetic to the Lazarus Long rule when it comes to practical jokes, although I am considerably more softhearted than that crotchety fiction gentleman.

Seriously, though. What if an old person with a heart condition had seen that network name? It’s already hard enough to get through life in our increasingly wired culture if you have no head for computers or networks; why make their days harder?

And get off my lawn!

One nearby wag has “FBI_Surveillance_Van” as their network name.

I’m not sure that you can fairly classify someone naming their own wifi system as a practical joke.

It just occurred to me that I live close enough to the town hall that someone with a good antenna and a militant lack of humor could get perturbed over my network’s name of Bailiwick.
But that would not make their angst my fault, my problem, or a joke played upon them.
