The ‘What If English Were Phonetically Consistent?’ video

Spoiler: it’d sound weird.

Kind of half-Scandinavian accent mixed with Middle English, in fact.  Comprehensible enough, if you’re reading along with the subtitles, but without them understanding would abruptly get harder.  I particularly enjoyed the way the guy did it, too: listen along and you’ll see why.  …Err, ‘hear.’

PS: I decided not to make any kind of tiresome linguistic jokes involving this.  No, not even here.  But the temptation is strong.  Sorry: the most interesting classes in my English major were the ones about how the brain processes language itself.

  1. I’ve always loved the sound of Middle English. Reciting the prologue to the Canterbury Tales was one of my favorite tasks in English class.”WHAN that Aprille with his shoures soute
The droughte of Marche hath perced to the roote”
