The ‘Dark Phoenix’ trailer.

It looks good…

…but I have lost the thread of this iteration of the X-Men.  I’m not sure which movies I should see first to make sense of Dark Phoenix.  And I don’t even know how much to invest in this series now, given that it will eventually cross the event horizon that is Disney-Marvel.  I mean, most of this is going to go away when they decide to bring in the X-Men to the MCU in 2021 or so, right?

  1. You can skip the last one, Apocalypse though it does introduce Sophie Turner’s version of Jean Grey. First Class and Days of Future Past are the decent ones (of *this* timeline, anyway.)

  2. Concur with both views above. First Class was pretty good and kinda fun, though not groundbreaking. DOFP was epic, and I recommend a viewing of it on those grounds. But it was too turgid, too sturm und drang, to merit repeated viewings.

(I don’t know how much credibility my view has, since I seem to be the only person in the world who hated the Quicksilver sequence. But the whole rest of the movie is serious, and then the creators took one of the most serious characters in canon and used him as the centerpiece in a farce! Anyone who loves that scene is wrong. Sorry not sorry.)

The chief merit of Apocalypse, meanwhile, is that it proved there was a need for Deadpool.

  3. Brief synopsis:

X-Men First Class: set in 1960s, introduces Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, Havok. Wolverine makes a cameo

X-Men Days Of Future Past: set both in the 1970s with the X-Men First Class actors and in a dystopian future dominated by the Sentinels with the actors from the first three X-Men movies. Wolverine is the link between them. Introduces Quicksilver.

X-Men Apocalypse: set in the 1980s with just X-Men First Class actors, introduces Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Storm, Psylocke. Wolverine makes another cameo.
