The idea behind “Ecclesiastical Reorganization” has been extensively expanded here. Let me just say here that reorganizations can be really awkward. Particularly when not everybody gets the memo.

Amazingly, that was the line that converted the whole damn thing from a few scenes and images to something approximating a short story.
As in: once I knew that, then I knew everything else, and then it was just a matter of writing it all down.
