Oscar Watch (first, last, and only): Black Panther gets Best Picture nomination.

Surprisingly presumably nobody, Black Panther got nominated for Best Picture. One of seven Oscar nominations (the rest being tech stuff); you can see all the other nominations here, but honestly it’s going to be this and who wins Best Animated Picture* that I expect most people reading this site will care about.  If I had to guess: if Black Panther doesn’t win then BlacKkKlansman will.  I heard that that movie was actually good, too.  You can’t always count on that happening.

But does Black Panther deserve Best Picture?  Well, it’s the only one of the nominees that I bothered to see.  I had a real good time.  It was also charmingly subversive, in a way that many people still haven’t quite noticed because they haven’t wanted to (not to mention, in a way that I no longer speak of on this site).  And, hey, war rhinos.  That’s not facetious, either: Best Picture movies need more spectacles in the nomination process, frankly.

So, good luck, Marvel.

*I gotta go with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I liked Incredibles 2, but the victory there was getting a sequel to the original that didn’t suck. I went to multiple showings of Spider-Verse. I figure that’s going to be diagnostic.
