‘Invisible Man’ gets a director at Universal.

And, in case you were wondering:

Upgrade” director Leigh Whannell has signed on to direct a reboot of “The Invisible Man.” The project reunites Whannell with Jason Blum, who is producing the Universal Pictures movie through his Blumhouse banner.

The move is part of a fresh strategy for Universal’s monsters properties, bringing creative directors with distinctive visions to the classic characters and moving on from the interconnected Dark Universe concept.

Via Coming Soon.

The Dark Universe idea actually always appealed to me, although you’ve all probably realized by now that I am easy to please when it comes to movies. For example, the remade Mummy* wasn’t really all that bad, and I quite liked Russell Crowe’s Hyde. But the movie-going public disagreed with me, and I can concede that they felt that they have justice on their side. But: if there’s going to be an Invisible Man movie — rampaging megalomania and all — then I suppose that it’s all ending well enough. And perhaps we can get a Jekyll/Hyde movie after all.

Although: what happened to Bride of Frankenstein? I would have watched that.

*Not that it’s as good as my generation’s Mummy. Then again, what is?

  1. Brendan Frasier is pretty good in exactly 3 films: Mummy, Mummy Returns, and Tarzan. He was okay in Encino Man as well. I haven’t liked any other film starring him.

    1. Frasier was remarkably good in his handful of guest-appearances on Scrubs. His final episode is one of the most poignant of the whole series.

    2. Give the guy more credit than that. He might not have portrayed characters with much depth, but they were reliably fun.

      1. Much like Dwane Johnson: will never win an oscar, but I’ll watch the **** out of those movies, and ENJOY EVERY MINUTE!

  2. There is one good thing about the Brendan Frasier “Mummy”, and it isn’t him. It’s Rachel Weisz.
