The live-action Mulan teaser trailer.

Maybe.

No songs, no Mushu, but Donny Yen and Jet Li. And there’s a lot of swordplay and archery going down for a merely PG-rated film. I could see this going PG-13. Then again, I could see just dropping the musical numbers and the Disney plot and instead making a full-bore, blood-soaked hard-R biopic of Hua Mulan. But I guess Disney wouldn’t be making it, then.

PS: And, not gonna lie: one major worry about this version of Mulan is that it’s likely to kiss the PRC’s butt until the latter is shiny. Which kind of sticks in my craw, these days. Guess we’ll see, huh?

  1. I’m hoping to see it. I’m a sucker for this sort of thing. I’ve watched most of the Three Kingdoms TV series, and I’m currently watching King’s War on Netflix (which can arguably be called a prequel; it has many of the same cast members as Three Kingdoms, is almost certainly made by the same people, and it’s about the founding of the Han Dynasty instead of the end of it). So yeah, I expect I’ll see this movie.

As for the PRC… we shall see. I knew a couple of Chinese nationals back then (actually a couple of years later) here in the US who told me they were pretty excited when a major US studio – i.e. Disney – made a high profile movie about a Chinese heroine. There’ll probably be a huge demand for this movie in China no matter what Beijing feels about the topic. And if nothing else, Christopher Robin proved that Disney isn’t worried about making live-action movies that aren’t going to be shown in that market.

So it might turn out okay.

Finally, I’ll note that I’m hesitant to use the word “bio-pic” when talking about Mulan. That implies that she actually existed, when the evidence suggests (sadly, imo) that was not the case.

Disney, get help. This will not age nearly as well as the animations…
